Spring Breakout, Yo!

Post by Edgy MD » Thu Mar 07, 2024 3:03 pm

MLB is up to something new this spring, adding a mini-schedule of 16 exhibitions over a four-day span to highlight top prospects from each team's system. Because MLB is all about MLB, the rosters will be largely composed of each team's top 30 prospects according to MLB pipeline. They will be grouped as a unit, regardless of level, much like the MLB All-Star Futures Game:

The Mets just announced roster is to include the fellers below, with their highest-level achieved and their MLB Pipeline ranking following their beautiful names:

Dominic Hamel (R), AA, #14

As it looks like this squad will play only one game as a group, the distinction between starter and reliever will likely be irrelevant to any but those as hopelessly pedantic like myself. That game is scheduled for March 15 (hosting the Washington Hopefuls) at 3:10 p.m. ET, broadcast by SNY from Clover Park in Port St. Lucie. For those in Florida, it's part of a single-admission doubleheader, with the biggish-leaguish version of the Mets major league team playing at 6:10 p.m. Get there early, as the spring doubleheader rules appear to suggest that this will only be a seven-inning affair.

Another interesting rule in place will be the option for robotic home plate umpire review, meaning that a manager can challenge a ball/strike call up to three times during a game, losing the challenge if the robo-ump judges him to be incorrect, and retaining it if his challenge is vindicated. There will also be no three-batter minima for pitchers, because whatever.

I'm guessing that guys at the top of the system who still have a chance of making the big-league squad, like Christian Scott, are less likely to be included.

Ryan Clifford doubled in a run and scored in his only at-bat. Fellow stars of the game included Brandon Sproat and Calvin Ziegler, who pitched the sixth and seventh, respectively, each retiring the side in order while striking out two.

Nice to hear.
Glad my kid, Calvin Ziegler, is healthy now.
