Now y'see I was assuming that the category meant a 1st Round pick Of that team, as opposed to just someone who played
with them after being a 1st round pick of someone else. I'll have to remember that.


I got a 0.05% score by selecting John-Ford Griffin as my Yanx 1st round pick (2001); don't think I've ever seen a score that low.
I remember someone, probably Bill Madden, going off on how that was a much superior pick to the Mets choice of Aaron Heilman
five slots earlier, so I remembered the name. He never played an ML game for the Yanx and his career went on to consist of a
combined 23 ABs for the Blue Jays in 2005 & 2007

But then the Rangers line blew up any possible low score as I went chalk on Prince Fielder (Tex/Mil) and Josh Hamilton (1st Round).
Both were the overall top pick in those categories at 45% & 22%

I only got eight out of nine today, but I'm pretty sure I got gypped. For Played in Negro Leagues/Played Outfield Min. 1 Game, I chose Hank Aaron. I can't see why that would have been rejected.

They only count Negro Leagues records up to 1948. I think that's an overall MLB rule, not an Immaculate Grid decision. I guess the logic is that after 1948, the best African American players were going into the major leagues? Not exactly true, but it's the only rationale I can think of.

Aaron played shortstop for the Indianapolis Clowns in 1951. I fell into the same trap a couple of weeks ago.

I was going for an all-Mets grid, which I had through the top two rows.

Piazza (32%) and ARod (33%) wrecked any chance at a good rarity score.
Alonso, Mays, Seaver, Hodges, Delgado, and Cruz were all 2% or under.

I also tried all-Mets but was shocked to learn Olerud was not a career .300 hitter (.295, looked it up) and I wasted Piazza on the 40-war instead of .300 hitting catchers list, then panicked and crashed with Pudge Rodriguez.

The whole .300 career list is hard for Mets. I had to go with Chipper Jones for a .300 shortstop.

I immediately thought of Rick Sutcliffe.

Had I thought of Rick Sutcliffe I would have instantly recognized him as being a CHC/CLE seeing how his trade to Chicago's north side
in 1984 and his subsequent rebound to a top pitcher (he was in the midst of a poor year* in CLE due to some dental problems IIRC)
was probably the biggest factor that kept the Mets from winning the NL East that year.

* Sutcliffe's 1984: 4-5 w/a 5.15 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 15 starts for the Indians prior to the June 13th trade;
20 starts for the Cubs going 16-1 w/a 2.69 ERA and 1.08 WHIP after arriving in Chicago. He won the NL CY

But, alas, Sutcliffe's name never popped into my head and likely wouldn't have unless I pondered over the question for many hours,
if not weeks, which I had no intention of doing.


btw, Sutcliffe was dealt, with George Frazier, for Joe Carter (I have zero recollection of him starting his ML career as a Cub), Mel Hall,
and Don Schultze, so all of those guys would work as CHC/CLE answers as well


second btw: for all the issues that those mid-80s Mets managed to create on their own, they also had an odd habit of running up
against pitchers in the midst either of a career year or at least a brilliant late season/playoff run: Sutcliffe '84, John Tudor 1985,
