RIP Pat Zachry, 1952-2024
Re: RIP Pat Zachry, 1952-2024
I was never quite able to find the game in the UMDB, but I remember my first game at 10 years old or so as a Pat Zachry shutout.
First guy I remember having a specific entrance record.

I kind of adopted him as my favorite Met, replacing Seaver, when I was a kid. Those were unrealistic expectations. Wasn't he an All-Star for us one season?

Yup, 1978 — his first full season with the team.

I remember a game when he was perfect for a while (not sure how long) but it all unraveled and when he left the game he kicked the dugout step and broke his foot.
I may be conflating two different games. It was obviously a long time ago.

Re: RIP Pat Zachry, 1952-2024
I just found an article from the Cincinnati Enquirer. This wasn't a natural death. Apparently it was a car accident that also killed his wife.
EDIT: Oops, the article is from eight years ago. Zachry survived that accident but his wife didn't.

Re: RIP Pat Zachry, 1952-2024
From November 2016:
At about 6 p.m., emergency responders were called to south I-35 at mile marker 354 where a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck ran off the roadway and rolled onto the passenger side of the vehicle, killing Naomi Sharron Zachry, 65.
Sharron Zachry was a longtime educator in the Midway school district. She was both a teacher and a principal at Hewitt Elementary and an assistant principal at the middle school before taking the principal post at the high school. She put off retirement plans at the high school and went to Castleman Creek Elementary, which opened in 2009.
Her husband, Pat Zachry, 64, of Waco, was driving and was taken by air ambulance to a local hospital, where he was in stable condition and was expected to be released, Wilson said.

Pat addressed the accident in 2020 with Howie Rose.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

He was a Texan, no?
He looks like an old Carradine in that YouTube preview.

I feel like I remember him winning a pre-game milking contest as a Met at Farmer's Day in Cincinnati.
It seemed kinda messed up to me to parade cows out on a field of grass they can't eat, but what did I know?

Re: RIP Pat Zachry, 1952-2024
Sorry, I don't think so. I remember it being 1-0 or 2-0 with back-to-back seventh-inning doubles (by John Stearns and ... Eilot Maddox?) being the difference maker.
I was with a group from The Police Boys Club. I don't imagine that they would get a block of tickets on July 4. On the other hand, in the Grant's Tomb Era, even on July 4, the majority of the seats would be empty.
Thanks for looking.

A few reflections in the wake of the Pat Zachry Invitational.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.
