Well it's been a nice, 41-year run for Eddie and the Cruisers as the best Springsteen biopic, but sooner or later, they were going to have to pass on that mantle.

Bruce saw the movie Badlands, which was based on the Charles Starkweather murders. Bruce then read a book about the actual murders so the song is more or less accurate.

"Death to My Hometown" from WRECKING BALL (2012)
I think this song is interesting if you wanted to look for something profound in its title. Otherwise rousing, though with Bruce singing in a fake Irish accent. Ranked 303 out 340.

It's almost a Pogues song, but the Pogues would have a had a MUCH less cliched drum beat. That gymnasium stomp that Max is producing sounds like it came out of a Casio, no?

This is not a bad little Springsteen rocker, and on that album, a highlight. Not sure who are giving the background vocals or all the backing really. Ranked No. 80 of 340

"Breakaway" from THE PROMISE (2010)

We will hear lots of resurrected and previously-unreleased tunes on this countdown, some of which will be new to you and me.

THE PROMISE was an elpee's worth of unreleased tracks from the DARKNESS era (77-78). Seconds into this song I thought this is an early version of "The Price You Pay" from THE RIVER and then it's right in your face as "the price you pay" is there in the lyrics.



This is a nice slow-burner about Bobby, Janie and Sonny and for my $$, better than the 306 it was ranked.

"Brilliant Disguise" from TUNNEL OF LOVE (1987)

What a treat! The randomizer hit on 20, where we found this gem--our first with an official video and a song some would argue belongs even higher on the list. A song about doubt. Synthed up like most of that record but not too synthy.

Rando Springsteen Song of the Day #6

"Stray Bullet" from THE TIES THAT BIND
TTTB was released as part of THE RIVER Box set, containing among other things the "original" single-LP RIVER album (titled THE TIES THAT BIND), along with a lot of RIVER outtakes. This was one of them, would have been home on side 4. Ranked 269/340 for "unnecessarily overwrought" vocals.

The quality of Bruce's outtakes speaks for him.

Pretty big deal, as big as Springbone was at the time, to do that one-shot, sitting-in-his-kitchen "Brilliant Disguise" promo video. The zoom in is so slow that you don't necessarily know it's happening until well into verse two. As the shot closes in, he has to keep his head as still as possible to stay in the frame, and when he finally drops it toward his left shoulder near the end, the camera operator briefly loses him and does a panicked adjustment but gets him back.

I like his brief, somewhat chagrined smiles in the delivery, as if he hadn't realized how many ironic lines were in his lyric until after he heard himself sing them. The fact that he was still a newlywed and was willing to release songs about relationship doubt seemed pretty bold at the time, and possibly even healthy, to critics. They tended to frame his on-stage interactions with new band member Patti Scialfa as her being his symbolic sweetheart in the same way Clarence Clemons was his symbolic best friend, but fans coming back from that Tunnel of Love tour were saying "He's totally getting with that chick."

He surprised the critics and validated the audience by bailing on the marriage and totally getting with that chick. Sometimes relationship doubts are just a healthy way to grow closer. Sometimes, they're a cry for help.

Today's Random Springsteen Song of the Day #7 goes out to all you mothers out there. Ironically, it's "Song for Orphans" from LETTER TO YOU (2020).

So this is obviously a "My Back Pages" ripoff, and dates to the 1970s as some of the LETTER tunes did. This one feel a little too clean, lacks a raggedly quality his songs used to have but my takeaway from this Rando Countdown so far is that Bruce's old trash is still pretty good. Ranked 238/340

Rando Springsteen Ditty of the Day (#9) is the gentle, folky homelessness tragedy, "Balboa Park" from GHOST OF TOM JOAD (1995). Springsteen was pretty much lost to me at this point in his career and I've never really got to know TOM JOAD. Spent time in Balboa Park last summer, nice place to visit but not to live I would imagine. Rank 243/340
