I remember very little from my one viewing of "Titanic". I wasn't overly impressed. If I hadn't been watching at the home of my college roommate from undergrad (whom I had not seen for 3-4 years), I most likely would have either gone to sleep or turned it off.

I can't recall seeing either "Shawshank Redemption" or "Goodfellows". Don't recall even hearing of Deception or Inception. Not a big movie watcher I guess. Now Jaws was awesome back in the day. Took years to feel truly comfortable in more than 4 feet of water when at the beach.

Different Seasons was a wonderful collection of stories. Was once a huge Stephen King fan, but I pretty much quit reading his books in the mid-to-late 80's.

If we're going to generate a list of things that are overrated, I've got two that bug me because I so often hear them mentioned when the topic of great performances comes up:
- the Whitney Houston Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl
- Michael Jackson's version of 'Billie Jean' for a Motown anniversary TV special

THEY WERE BOTH LIP-SYNCHED!!! ... something which automatically disqualifies them from top anything unless you're just going to judge Jackson's strictly
as a dance routine. But both "songs" were prerecorded. Whitney may have been singing along but her mic was turned off while a recording made earlier
(for a pre-planned single and video release) was what both the in-house and TV audiences heard. And MJ was barely even pretending to sing as the album
version of his song played with no band or backups in sight.

Never really much listened to Whitney. My only issue with her was that she's one of those singers with a great voice who seems to say that I'm going to
prove that to you by belting it out from Note #1 to the very end. There's little crafting and no subtlety about it, just top gear from beginning to end.

That's just my general impression of her which has nothing to do with the anthem thing. My problem with that was that it was pre-packaged
patriotism courtesy of an arrangement between the record company, the NFL, and the Pentagon.

I'm not sure whether you mean just the performance or the composition as well.

One of my favorite Dolly Parton facts is that she wrote "IWA❤️Y" and "Jolene" in the same afternoon.

That's a lucrative day.

And she sang them both beautifully.

Yes, what I mean is I hate Whitney’s version

That Whitney song is particularly indicative of the over-the-top treatment of which I was speaking. No valleys only peaks, but that's not a good thing even if it seems like it might be.

Imagine, if you will, that same style on, say, HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPE VINE or LET'S STAY TOGETHER; no subtlety, no build up, just pedal to the metal from start to finish.
Well fortunately neither Marvin Gaye nor Al Green did, or if they did then they rightly rejected the suggestion.

The Oscars. I don't even know who anyone is anymore, let alone the movies. I scan the Oscars audience every year and wonder to myself, where the hell is Walter Matthau and Gene Hackman? The movies? Fuhgeddaboutthem. I couldn't even name a single best movie nominee.

And time is flying. I can't believe a whole year's gone by since that Will Smith-Chris Rock slap fiasco.

Look, I'm up for a laugh as much as anyone and try not to be overly annoying and complaining about shit but this is not one bit funny, nevermind the offensive part , starting at 59' they introduce the stars of The Banshees of Inisherin, nauseating

Gene Hackman is 93 y/o, retired from acting and lives in New Mexico where he keeps in shape by bicycling. Probably not a big chance of him attending tonight's gala.

Walter Matthau, dead for the past 23 years, is an even less likely possibility.

Titanic includes the line, "It was the ship of dreams... to everyone else. To me it was a slave ship, taking me back to America in chains."

Good God.

Goodfellas is one of those films I've never actually sat through but I feel like I've seen most of it in bits and pieces here and there. It's not a cool thing to admit, but there it is.
How did you even get to be an American of your age where you've not seen these movies? Is your TV broken?

Pretty much. I haven't owned a TV in this century. It's too much of a narcotic to me.

One of the downsides of never having watched Titanic is not having the base of knowledge to be able to agree with posts like this.

Occurs to me I haven't seen Inception either.

And while we're at it about Titanic, Celine Dion is near the top of my list of overrated things.

I think Titanic works better as a chick flick than as a disaster movie, although it's both. It's been over two decades since I watched it. I recall it as being reasonably entertaining, although overly sappy.
