IGT 7/10 - Nats @ Mets - 7:10-ish EDT

Post by Frayed Knot » Wed Jul 10, 2024 1:49 pm

If you know the date then you also know the starting time. Last night's game dropped the Nats to four games behind us.

Patrick Corbin vs Luis Severino

Corbin is big, lefty, from the Syracuse area (which Gary will remind us of at least twice tonight, also of his hoops prowess), dependable ... and really not very good.
But he's consistently not very good so he takes the ball every fifth day which in itself is ... well, not very good.
He's led the NL in losses each of the last three seasons. And over the last four seasons he's twice led the league in hits allowed (and leads this year too),
twice led in ER allowed (leads currently), and once in HRs allowed (is two off the lead this year).

So we got that going for us.

Garrett to the IL (Injured List), Orze to the IL (International League, if they still call it that).

Matin has arrived. Young has returned.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

I think of Corbin as one of those guys who turns into Cy Young when he faces the Mets, but the reality is that the Mets' OPS against Corbin is .823 over his career.

Tonight is college night, and incoming freshman Lunchpail is there. They let them walk onto the field pregame

Nimmo is hot.

Nimmo is, like, Daniel-Murphy-2015-post-season hot.

Things said much more often about baseball these days: 'How is that Not an error?!?'
The Pete "hit" is today's first example.

OMG! SNY just had about a minute long piece on Brooklyn's famous Spumoni Gardens pizzeria on the Mets broadcast. VicSage loves that place. He grew up walking distance from there. Anybody know why they showed that clip?

John Franco grew up right across the street. In the restaurant part of the joint, there's a photo of Franco with Mike Piazza eating there.

Bunch of soft hits by the Nats here ... but on the run scoring hit:
- not a good throw by Taylor
- probably should have been cut by Pete who was also out of position on such a short hit
- could possibly have been blocked/smothered by Alvarez
- and the biggest crime: no backup by Severino

Hard to sustain rallies when you start them with two men out and no one on.

Personally not a fan of L&B Spumoni but different strokes for different folks. I'm more of a thin crust Grimaldis/Patsy's guy. I had the volume off so couldn't figure out why they showed that piece.

Me neither. It's not bad but I never ever understood its fanatical following and over the top reputation where it consistently shows up on top 10 or top 20 or top 50 lists of pizzerias. Its regular slice is average and the square slice that it's famous for is more weird than excellent. It's just different.

There's this recent book that ranks the best pizzerias nationwide and includes dozens and dozens and dozens (hundreds?) of pizzerias. I've never read it but have tremendous respect for it because, to great controversy, it doesn't include Spumoni Gardens in its rankings. I think the author's name is Levine.

The restaurant at Spumoni Gardens is the best deal there, I think, but I haven't been there since the Covid lockdowns of 2020.

Weird base running inning:
- Pete advances only from 2nd to 3rd on a double
- Alvarez doesn't advance at all from 2nd on a single
- then Iglesies scores from 2nd on a ground out

Let us count the ways the bullpen might blow this.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Like 70% of the radio spots I'm getting are for road safety. Safety for drivers, safety for cyclists, safety for pedestrians.

Go, Diekman!!
