My yesterday Wordle:

This has been my everyday starting word since I scored a hole-in-one last year with HORSE.

When it comes up blank for me, as it did today, my second word is BLIND.

B L I N D

At this point, I had a hunch that this might be one of those consonant-vowel-double consonant-Y words.

F U N N Y

Nope! But getting the U was helpful. I didn't figure the word was likely to end with the U, and since I now knew there was only one N in the word and it was locked in the fourth position, I decided that U was unlikely to be the first letter either, since it would probably be followed with an N. So U slides into the third position.

G A U N T

Bingo! WordleBot told me that I had four words to choose from: GAUNT, VAUNT, JAUNT, and TAUNT. (DAUNT and HAUNT were already eliminated by my earlier guesses.)

I probably would have gone next with JAUNT and then VAUNT if I hadn't hit on GAUNT. If it had been TAUNT I would have lost. I don't think it would have occurred to be because of the tendency that I (and others, I think) sometimes have to forget that a guessed letter can appear more than once.

gave me a look at some high-probabiltiy letters in L & O, plus using one of my consonants to start.

going into the third guess, my best wrong guess was DAUNT, which would've left me with a 85% solve rate. instead i went a different direction.

P A N T Y

omitted a few other possible consonants, and left me with nearly no other good landing spots for T or N. wordlebot, however, was deeply disappointed in my guess. it could've led me straight into disaster. PANTY was a word it considered to be "unlikely" though it was much more of a real word than the other 15 unlikely words available to me at that guess, alongside 7 "probable" answers.. my best wrong answer, still DAUNT, now had only a 67% solve rate.

with six real words to pick from, and four less-real ones, i rolled the dice and, for once, got the roll i needed. almost went with DAUNT, but figured it was a little less likely as a wordle word.

CANOE was my everyday starting word until I got a hole in one on it. Then, I started switching between CANOE, STEIN, and CAMEO. CAMEO because it's about as close as you can get to CANOE.

But there's a big frequency difference between an M and an N, and the O at the end is almost always out of position. So I passed up the temptation to open with CAMEO and went with CANOE yesterday. Still got a birdie out of it, but a hole in one would've been much sweeter.
