Where Mets Rank in 2024

Post by Benjamin Grimm » Fri Feb 16, 2024 3:12 pm

Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo are all poised to move up into semi-elite territory on some of the Mets' all-time offensive lists, with Francisco Lindor in the mix in a few categories as well. There are very few established Mets players on the pitching staff. Edwin Diaz is already among the all-time save leaders and he'll soon start making inroads in the games pitched category.

I'd like to see a 200-hit season from McNeil.

It appears that David Wright was pretty damn good. With all the numbers they Mets keep retiring, it would seem that Wright would be a most worth candidate. His career, Mets and otherwise, was greater than Doc Gooden's and Darryl Strawberry's, IMHO.
When did the choices get so hard
With so much more at stake
Life gets mighty precious
When there's less of it to waste

There are four Mets who currently have enough plate appearances (295) to qualify for the batting title. (Or, for these purposes, the team lead in the three slash categories.)

They are Lindor, Alonso, Nimmo, and McNeil. Bader is 10 plate appearances shy and Martinez is short by 17.

So who leads the Mets in slugging percentage, I'm sure you're wondering. Well, if we only go to three decimal places, it's a three-way tie at .454!

Francisco Lindor: .454308
Brandon Nimmo: .454277
Pete Alonso: .453552

J.D. Martinez would be ahead of all of them, at .456790.

The Mets leader in batting average is Lindor at .253, although Bader is at .273. And in OBP, Nimmo leads with .361.

This concludes today's fun fact.

That is a tight race!!

Non-qualifying Francisco Álvarez (considerably more non-qualifying than Martinez) leads them all at .479. Even more impressive non qualifiers include Luis Torrens (.547 in 57 plate appearances), Mark Vientos (.549 in 199 plate appearances) and José Iglesias (.582 😮 and a #1 hit record in 84 plate appearances).

Brandon Nimmo hit his 100th home run as a Met not so long ago, and Francisco Lindor is poised to do the same. Both of them have now entered the Top Twenty, at the expense of John Milner (94) and Cleon Jones (93). And it looks like Pete Alonso will be sticking around for the rest of the season, giving him a shot at third place.

I hope Todd Hundley enjoyed his time in the top 10.

I guess if you pass Ed Kranepool on any offensive list — except maybe stolen bases and possibly triples — you've achieved All-Time Met status.
