Oh, and hey! The Tommy Pham deal brought in wondrous teenage infielder Jeremy Rodriguez, who is the walking, talking embodiment of awesome.

At only 17, he is currently to The Florida Complex League what Vlassic is to pickles. Like, when he goes to the ballpark, Robin Yount, George Brett, and Cal Ripken all fight over who gets to carry his bags and shine his shoes.

That's what I was saying. (I may not have made it clear.) The Scherzer/Verlander deals were about getting prospects. The trades of guys like Walker and Granderson in 2017 were about salary relief.

Oh, you were clear. I was just doubling down on your point.

Hey, maybe that's how we alienated Met Fairy.

I think she left because she didn't like my response to her post about how Michael Conforto was going to fully recover from his serious shoulder injury and surgery all because her husband, who probably doesn't have to lift anything heavier than a pencil, recovered from the same injury.

If that's true, and I hope it's not ... whatever.

This is so Rashomony. Everybody thinks they're to blame for her departure.

Rashomony is a good word. It kind of sounds like a name for what Toshiro Mifune had to pay his ex-wife for support every month.

Bring back the BOC if for no other reason than that line.

Will Sammon, writing for The Athletic, opines that it will be hard to predict what the Mets might get in return for slugger Pete Alonso. Even though Alonso will be a free agent right after this season and thus a half-year rental, and he's guaranteed $10M for the last half of the season, making him an expensive get for many small market teams, and he's closing in on 30 at a position that historically, ages terribly, despite all of that, it will be a buyer's market because 40% of the teams make the playoffs and so the majority of all teams will be buyers at the deadline and not sellers.

I thought I'd be reading about fire sale chatter.

It's hard to say if Conforto fully recovered from that injury. He bounced back right after surgery but he kinda went into a decline soon after ... and before his age 30 season.

In the next 35 games (through July 22) the Mets have only two games against a team that currently has a winning record (Yankees).

If they can go 22-13 (or better) in those next 35 games, then selling might be off the table. That would bring them right up to .500.
21-10 since London. Nicely on pace for keeping selling “off the table.”

If you're sitting in the 3rd wild card on July 19th, you are definitely a buyer.

When Senga returns, it's widely believed they'll be going to a 6-man rotation. That means one less bullpen arm, so the quality of those arms will be critical. I don't really trust anyone outside of Nunez and Diaz at this point (and I'm a little shaky on Diaz). Anyone else can be replaced.

In the NL, only the Marlins, Rockies and maybe the Nats are sellers. Everyone else is a good week away from being in the spot where the Mets are now. In the AL it's Jays, A's White Sox and Angels. Rangers are on the cusp, as are the Tigers. Somewhere on those teams there must be two solid middle innings guys that can be had without giving away the farm. This is where Stearns gets to earn those big bux.
Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.

You're forgetting José Butto, who has been such money since moving to the bullpen that he might end up Lugo-ing up his careeer and getting stuck there.

I saw someone (probably not anyone credible) suggesting the Mets trade Baty, Parada, and Sproat to the White Sox for a reliever named Garrett Crochet.

I would like the proposal better if Sproat was replaced with someone else.

Selling has to be off the table for the Mets, but I wouldn't go all in on buying with this team either. As in, I would not trade top prospects for rental type players. Smaller deals for the bullpen or deals for players and longer control would be fine.

I'd be shocked if that's all it took to get Crochet. But I also worry that paying top dollar for multiple years of a pitcher is just too risky right now.

The Nats just got their current #6 prospect (keep in mind that mlb.com rates Sproat as #6 for the Mets) for a year and a half of Hunter Harvey. It's a seller's market, so while the Mets absolutely need bullpen help they have to be careful.

Getting disrepected and undervalued by the Mets all the way to being an All-Star with another club that believes in him you mean?
