68. Daily Bruce Countdown is Back!
Today we encounter #106, "I'm a Rocker" from THE RIVER. I heard a good explanation for the mix of serious themes and jokey high energy party tunes on this album: "I'm a Rocker" and "Sherry Darlin" were the songs playing on the car radios of the "Drive All Night" and "I Wanna Marry You" guys.

69. The Bruce Randomizer landed at 100 this morning-- "Spare Parts" from Tunnel OF LOVE, a bluesy story about what happens after Janey and Bobby get busy.

70. "Gotta Get that Feeling" from THE PROMISE. This is another soul song that Southside Johnny would've done well. I can't believe he didn't even. 229/340
Re: Springsteen
Bruce likes to stick a baptism in here and there. I guess for that reason, I always associated this one with "Reason to Believe."Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 8:27 am 69. Seems like an idea in search of a song though. Minor-key rawk, verses built around an uninspiring progression, awkwardly inverted lines that lead to false rhymes, and trying to beat a melody that isn't there out of the whole thing like Rocky punching bloody carcasses down at the slaughterhouse.
SPOILER ALERT: Also, Bruce doesn't seem to realize that he has Janey's baby being born twice in the course of the story.
Number 100, you say?

The real question is it Crazy Janey? Is it Puerto Rican Jane?

And is faithless Bobby the same guy who was saying all the right words to her in "Janey Don’t You Lose Heart”?Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2024 4:36 pm The real question is it Crazy Janey? Is it Puerto Rican Jane?

71. I think you're familiar with today's selection, the happy-sad "Huh-huh Hungry Heart," from THE RIVER. You're also probably familiar with the story that this song was written for Joey Ramone but urged to remain with Bruce by Jon Landau who wanted very much for Bruce to have a hit single. Ranked 26/340

72. Oh great writeup on All or Nothin' at All goes to waste as that song already came up on day 3.
New spin lands on No. 50 and "Long Walk Home" from MAGIC, a kind of update on "My Hometown" complete with a video. Warm writeup in the review.

I think Human Touch is an underrated Bruce album. I like upbeat Bruce better than sad Bruce. This is a good song!Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 8:00 am 72. Gotta wonder how much Bruce was influenced by KISS' "Nothin' to Lose" with "All or Nothin' at All," from HUMAN TOUCH. Both songs utilize "nothin'" with the apostrophe and are about demanding some affection (maybe physical in Bruce's case, definitely from KISS). I'm jokin' 180/340

As noted above this was an accidental post, a repeat from Day 3 but I'm glad you preserved the writeup! Note "Long Walk Home" is the proper Day 72 song.Marshmallowmilkshake wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 8:26 amI think Human Touch is an underrated Bruce album. I like upbeat Bruce better and sad Bruce. Thank you for this thread. It has me thinking big thoughts about Springsteen — as well as many little ones — I won't include in this space. But my broadening vision of Springy helps me understand the universe and myself better.
Good late-stage Clarence Clemons solo in "Long Walk Home."

Some accidents lead to good results. Now I want to listen to a playlist on the way home from work. I created a mashup as if Human Touch and Lucky Town were one CD, taking the best of each.

Re: Springsteen
I did that with a streaming playlist. I also condensed the River to a single platter
Re: Springsteen
Has anybody compressed High Hopes into a single?

Bruce was on CBS Sunday Morning to talk up NEBRASKA, calling it his best record, drumming up publicity for the book and forthcoming movie, etc

73. Today's Bruce of the Day selection is "Leah" from DEVILS & DUST. This record has always been a little fuzzy to me, comes off maybe too low energy, and not a lot that grips you right away. That said, Leah is pleasant and sunny, if not nearly as awesome as "Ah, Leah."

Actually a re-run piece from a year or so ago, around the time the Warren Zanes book came out.Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2024 7:41 am Bruce was on CBS Sunday Morning to talk up NEBRASKA, calling it his best record, drumming up publicity for the book and forthcoming movie, etc

Re: Springsteen
Day 75 of the Bruce 340, and this is our first visit to the Top 10 (#9) with "The River."
You may know this song was loosely based on the story of Bruce's sister Ginny and her husband Mickey whose teen pregnancy condemned them to the same fate of their parents.

Re: Springsteen
Jarring to hear/see "The River" set against Born in the USA graphix.
Re: Springsteen
A happy ending though: they’re still married 50 years later, had two other children as well, lots of grandchildren, etc.Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2024 8:05 am Day 75 of the Bruce 340, and this is our first visit to the Top 10 (#9) with "The River."

Mickey became a Rodeo Cowboy or something? Memory fuzzy on that.
76. Oddball song today, "Candy's Boy" from THE PROMISE. This song opens with a word-for-word verse from "Candy's Room" and later adds a couplet used in "Drive All Night." But this tale of a young thug in love isn't intense but jaunty, featuring an extended Jersey-shore style organ solo. Ranked 312/340
