Christian Scott to IL with a strained UCL

Post by smg58 » Tue Jul 23, 2024 6:04 pm

From Rotoworld:
Mets placed RHP Christian Scott on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow UCL sprain. Not great. The severity of the issue is a bit unclear at the moment since the Mets are still waiting for doctors to review his MRI results. However, it certainly appears likely that Scott is facing an extended absence, even if it’s merely a sprain and not a complete tear. The 25-year-old rookie right-hander, who holds a pedestrian 4.56 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 39/12 K/BB ratio across 47 1/3 innings (nine starts) this season in his first taste of the majors, is universally-regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, so it’s a big loss for New York. There should be some clarity on his status soon, but fantasy managers should prepare for the possibility that his season is over.
The good news is that a sprain is not as catastrophic as a tear (assuming that's all this is), but even a relatively mild sprain could end his season at this point.

The other good news is that Senga takes his spot in the rotation starting Friday.

Some recover from sprains without surgery and some don't

He has 90 IP for the season(majors and minors), which is more than last year. They were probably going to shut him down soon anyhow.
But I hope it doesn't require any surgery that would keep him from starting next year with the big club.

Since it's the Mets, I assume the news will get progressively worse until the Tommy John Surgery news gets out in a month or two.

On the (annoying) ESPN bottom of the screen crawl, it mentions the Christian Scott will be 'shut down for two weeks' and that they 'hope he can return this season'.

If I have my information right, they can't tell from the imaging if there's just inflammation, or if the ligament has a tear. If it's torn, it's TJ time. If it's not, they hope that rest and rehab will get him back this season.

Either way, it's the second year in a row he's had UCL issues. So it kinda feels like TJ surgery is going to be inevitable at some point.
