The White Sox' season/streak deserves its own thread

Post by Frayed Knot » Tue Aug 06, 2024 12:11 pm

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2024 9:19 am The White Sox have now lost 21 consecutive games.

This ties the season-opening streak that the Orioles suffered through in 1988.

In modern (since 1900) history, only one team has had a longer losing streak; the 1961 Phillies lost 23 in a row.
Those '88 O's, who were already on their second manager before the streak was even half over, ended the streak with a 9-0 win against ... the White Sox.
They then dropped to next two games in that series.
From 0-21 they went on to go 54 - 86 (.388) to finish at 54 - 107 (.335)

The '61 Phils won the back half of a DH on July 28th. Prior to that they had lost five straight and were already 29-59 before that mini-streak started.
They didn't win again until Game 2 of a DH on August 20, so that's 23 straight (and 28 of 29) between DH splits including three DH sweeps in between.
They went on to record a 47-107-1 record (.305) in the final year of the 154 game season.

The 2003 Tigers finished with 119 losses. The last three games were against the Twins, which clinched a postseason berth, and sent out a lineup of September call ups for the last two games, which the Tigers won. There was speculation that Ron Gardenhire was either resting his regulars in meaningless games or sparing Alan Trammell the embarrassment of tying the loss record. Probably a little of both.

The 2003 Tigers featured celebrated former Mets Shane Halter and Craig Paquette, along with the nascent talents of future Met Andres Torres.

Their rotation was topped by multi-talented Met offspring Nate Cornejo.

And boy, did they lose.

The Sox are supposedly so awful that I'm wishing that their live games were on the MLB network so I could see it for myself.

1. Amazing that you wrote that, and I could not for the life of me come up with the guy's name.

2. Even after looking it up, not a single cell in my brain said, "Oh, yeah, him." Maybe half a cell.

3. He replaced Tony LaRussa, who had the audacity to finish with a .500 record.

4. Amazingly, they announced his firing without announcing who would take over as interim. They apparently haven't yet been able to talk anybody into doing it. They have a day off today and they hope to have something figured out by tomorrow when the players get to the park.

Can I be your bench coach? I coach benches very well.

If you can provide a list of benches that I can talk to, I will consider your application.

I'm putting about 100 cranes on Ozzie Guillen being willing and crazy enough to come back and give it a go.

White Sox fall to 31-100 today. At same juncture of 1962, Mets were 33-98.

Anthony DiComo notices who’s on the schedule.
Sixty-two years after the Mets’ inaugural 1962 season, that team not only remains the worst in modern baseball history, but a symbol of futility even beyond the game -- at least for now. For the first time in more than two decades, the ’62 Mets face a realistic challenge to their record 120 losses from a White Sox club featuring a 31-104 record and a 124-loss pace. What’s more, the Mets have a chance to bury the White Sox further when they visit the South Side of Chicago for a three-game series beginning Friday.

"It might happen,” said Craig Anderson, another ’62 Mets pitcher who finished his career with a 19-game losing streak. “We understand it might happen. But no, we would not want them to do that."

"I wouldn’t wish it on anybody,” agreed Hook. “Why would I wish that somebody is terrible?"

Much as the Mets waited 50 years for their first no-hitter, their 40-120 record in their inaugural season is more a quirk of history than a referendum on the franchise. It’s always been part of what has made the Mets the Mets.

Rather than bemoan all those losses, members of the ’62 team recall the summer fondly. They have warm memories of Stengel charming reporters at the tail end of his career, and of fans who packed the Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan, thrilled to have National League baseball back in New York.

"You know, it could have been a horrible year,” said Hook, who kept the ball after recording the first win in Mets history in the franchise’s 10th game. "But I think with the fan base that we had, and the attendance we had and the way the fans treated us, it wasn’t. It could have been horrible, but it wasn’t that bad."
