This was shown this afternoon but they may also be re-showing it as if for the first time in tonight's prime time segment.

A surprise qualifying by the Irish women in the 4x400 relay led to them almost claiming the bronze medal but they
wound up getting nosed out at the line by ... the team from U.K. So close.

A spirited men's high jump competition came down to an American and a New Zealander as both outlasted the favored
Qatari jumper (who was actually from Qatar as opposed to the numerous foreign athletes they've 'bought' in recent years).
The Yank and the Kiwi were tied at the same height and then each missed three times at the next. At that point they
had the choice of either sharing the gold or going to a jump-off. They chose the jump-off (tries at increasingly lower
heights) until one succeeds while the other misses. After two rounds the New Zealander prevailed.

This has been a great games for Ireland, our best ever I think, especially great to see the ladies in the sprint competition coming close as a team and individually, building nicely for LA

It has been over 8 hours since that game ended and I still haven't found a box score.
I even clicked on the USA Today story link to a box score and it wasn't. It was a play-by-play.

I think the 'athletes' who got the most screen time this year were Snoop, Flavor Flav, and Tom Cruise.

My wife asked what I was yelling at the TV about and I said,
"They keep showing fucking Tom Cruise on the screen!" He must
have some NBC/Peacock/Universal thing coming up.

My wife was watching the OLympics and I was watching something else downstairs.
My wife kept saying "You've GOT to see Tom Cruise" and I kept saying "No. I don't".

We watched most of the prime time coverage, but rarely a day went by when I didn't know the outcome to the big events before they aired. It was 90% gymnastics, swimming and track, 5% diving, 5% other.

Swimming just doesn't make great TV except for the last few yards. Track is better as you can actually see them work

In my next life I plan to be an Olympic Water Polo star in
the summers and a Curling champ in the winters.

Big endorsement deals. Wheaties boxes and several trophy
wives in a half dozen countries.

I have some news on and they just showed some pictures of
the teams chewing on the medals like you might see in an old
western movie with someone biting a gold coin.

Did they always do this or is this a 2024 thing?

I assume they are doing this for the photographers and not testing the gold purity (like in the old days ( is that the term?) , but yes, definitely seems a lot were doing it

I don't like, how in individual sports, up to three competitors from a single country can compete, but in most (but not all) team sports, a single team is selected to represent the nation. If a nation is great at water polo or handball or field hockey, let them send multiple teams. Let the US send three basketball teams.

Also, on the subject of basketball, why are there 48 track and field events, 20 or more gymnastics events, but only two basketball events — men's and women's fullcourt five-on-five.

Let's have three-on-three halfcourt, one-on-one, H-O-R-S-E, three-point shooting, and slam dunking. It's cool and all that Michael Phelps has 28 medals (23 of them gold) and Katie Ledecky has 50 (!!) (38 of them gold), but the basketball players only get one shot every four years.

There was three-on-three hoops in Paris, although not half court.

Alright! How did I miss? Was a medal sport? Did NBA players participate?

OE: Looks like B-leaguers.

I ended up watching almost no Olympics at all. The time zone thing ruins it for me. I don't know what's on a delay and only being staged to appear live, and what isn't, so I ignored essentially all of it unless it was on somewhere in the background.

There were some hoop-heads who were extremely mad and/or embarrassed by this country's poor showing in 3 on 3 baskets.
One called the 3x3 game 'the essence of basketball', IIRC, and we've got to take this more seriously dammit and do better!!!!

Personally I'm entirely indifferent to the whole thing.

I'd like to know what the height was on that leap and then what pct of two-legged Americans could clear it.
