Poor Man's Jeff

While the trade deadline has precluded the Mets from filling their sudden roster opening by trading for any big league players, they've made a cash deal with the Red Sox (seemingly their favorite partner for fringy transactions) to acquire Eddy Alvarez.

The 34-year-old Eddy, a native of Miami but a high school graduate out of Salt Lake City, has played parts of three seasons (2020-2202) for the Marlins and Dodgers, going .183 / .262 / .262 // .524 in 142 plate appearances. His AAA numbers are more encouraging, putting up OPSes between .812 and .967 each year from 2019 to 2024.

How that will translate is what remains to be discovered but like Jeff McNeil, he has spent his career bouncing regularly among all infield and outfield positions.

Our challenge then is learn to love this man. Hopefully, he makes it easy. He sure knows how to leave Worcester in style.

Alvarez is only the third American ever to medal in both the Summer and Winter Olympics, pulling off the feat in both baseball and short-track speed skating.

He was a pretty good speed skater back in the day, having participated in the Olympics.

Reyes DFAed and Alvarez called up. I don’t think he is postseason-eligible, though.

Eddy Alvarez DFA’d for Kranick (40-man). Wasn’t eligible for postseason since he wasn’t in the organization pre-September.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.
