Rich Hill, who pitched for the Mets in 2021, signed with the Red Sox on August 17 and is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 3 relief appearances so far. He had a 0.00 ERA in 2 innings for their Triple-A club in Worcester.

Colin Holderman, who pitched for the Mets in 2022, is 3-5 with a 3.43 ERA and 10.1 K/9 in 44 relief appearances for the Pirates. He had a 5.87 ERA in 7 2/3 innings for their Triple-A club in Indianapolis.

Adrian Houser, who pitched for the Mets earlier in 2024 but was let go, was signed by the Cubs on August 6 and went 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 4 starts for their Triple-A team in Iowa. He was released on August 31 and promptly signed by the Orioles. He has yet to play a game in their system.

It’s not going great for Chris Flexen of late. From ESPN:
The Chicago White Sox had their latest skid extended to 11 games with a 13-3 rout at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, the 20th straight loss in which Chris Flexen started to set baseball's modern-era (since 1900) record for most consecutive losses in a pitcher's starts that had been shared with the Washington Nationals' Bob Groom.

Coming off an 0-10 homestand, Chicago dropped to 31-108 and is on its third-longest skid this season after slides of 21 games from July 10 to Aug. 5 and 14 from May 22 to June 6. The White Sox would have to go 12-11 to avoid tying the post-1900 loss record set by the 1962 New York Mets, who went 40-120.

Chicago is on pace to finish 36-126, which would be the second-most defeats behind the 1899 Cleveland Spiders at 20-134. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the White Sox are 4-41 in their past 45 games, the worst record over a 45-game span since the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics.

Flexen (2-14) allowed three runs and seven hits in 3⅓ innings and is 0-11 with a 5.73 ERA in 21 appearances (20 starts) since winning May 8 at Tampa Bay. He moved out of a tie with the Washington Nationals' Bob Groom to take sole possession of the longest losing streak in a single pitcher's starts since 1900, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The Nationals lost 19 straight games started by Groom in 1909. Flexen is also two such losses ahead of the Brewers' Chris Capuano, who was 0-13 with a 6.12 ERA for Milwaukee in 23 appearances (18 starts) from May 13, 2007, through June 3, 2010, missing 2008 and '09 following Tommy John surgery.

"Every time I take the ball, I expect myself to go out and be competitive, have strong outings," Flexen said. "I don't think a lot of them have been all that great, a couple of quality starts in there; but overall, my performance has been very disappointing on my end."
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

Also purchasing a ticket on the DFA train last night was the Washington Nationals' Travis Blankenhorn.

Blankety Blank bats lefthanded and plays the outfield as well as second, so it's probably not the craziest thought in the world that the Mets might pick him up.

I'm not sure, but I kinda feel like Max Scherzer is the Brett Favre of the Mets, and Justin Verlander is the Aaron Rodgers.

That's probably less than fair. I guess, to take it further, Tim Tebow is the Tim Tebow of the Mets.

It's too bad Lopez had that freakout. The Mets might have won a couple of extra games over the summer if he had remained. And this looks like it might be a year where every game matters.

He turned 32 last month. It would be fun to have him back, if he has anything left. Maybe he'd be willing to try to prove himself in Syracuse.

When we look back on the summer of 2024, what will we see? Green.

Not just any green, but a hue so affronting that fashion news media has described it as “noxious,” “abrasive” and the color of “bilious sludge.” Picture Gumby with jaundice. Picture a Bottega Veneta handbag, dipped in Nickelodeon slime.

I'm in a real pickle phase. I'm eating about a pickle a day. Sometimes two. Or three. The other night, I woke up at four in the morning to have a pickle because I was suddenly craving one. I stayed in bed for about half an hour trying to resist the urge because I was too sleepy to get out of bed but in the end, the pickle won. Maybe I'll take a pregnancy test next week.
