Re: 2024 Presidential Election - Take II
Pennsylvania may not decide it. North Carolina has a governor's race which may help Harris win the state. The Republican candidate, Mark Robinson is, well......
Someone who compared gay people to cow manure.
Believes trans people are the work of the devil.
Actually said out loud in front of microphones "Some people need killing."
Just was outed by CNN as posting on Black porn web forums that 'I'm a Black Nazi" and "I wish I could own slaves". (Among other things CNN isn't posting because they're even worse than that, apparently.)
Of course this guy is an evangelical Christian, don't ya know. He had a chance until yesterday to pull out of the race but refused. He could lose by 20 points and depress Republican turnout statewide. That's 16 electoral votes compared to Pennsylvania's 19. Not that Pennsylvania isn't important, but Harris has many more routes to 270 EV's than Trump does. NC also counts its votes quickly (unlike Pennsylvania). So we should know who won Election night.

PA+WI+MI plus all the states that aren't tossups plus the congressional district that includes Omaha equals 270 electoral votes. North Carolina without Pennsylvania just gets Harris to 267, so she'd need one more state - possibly Georgia or Arizona, but most likely Nevada - to get to 270. So it's probably going to be a late night and possibly an early morning.
This is a great organization that provides ride shares for voters who fit the blue demographic. I'm going to volunteer; I just need to figure out whether I'm going to do it here in Ohio where there's a tight Senate race, or drive a couple of hours to Pittsburgh.

Early this year, though, Mrs Lefty said, "There's no way I can stay up until 4 AM watching Steve Kornacki and the big board", so we are literally flying to Hawaii that week. They're 6 hours behind, so all the polls in the continental US will be closed by dinnertime. It was weird logic, but hey, Hawaii in November.

Re: 2024 Presidential Election - Take II
That reminds me of Y2K. I had to take the final class for my Masters at GWU in Washington DC. So I scheduled it for election week, figuring I could crash the victory party for whichever party won. Of course that was the year of the "hanging chads" so the election wasn't decided (and no parties) until after I left town.Lefty Specialist wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2024 2:55 pm Early this year, though, Mrs Lefty said, "There's no way I can stay up until 4 AM watching Steve Kornacki and the big board", so we are literally flying to Hawaii that week. Re: 2024 Presidential Election - Take II
Lefty Jr, got his Masters at AU. Finished 9 months before COVID hit so his timing was good. Doesn't like that his vote is essentially meaningless since DC went 96% for Biden last time. He'd like the opportunity to vote for two new senators, though. Get it done, Democrats.
It's true that NC doesn't fully make up for PA, but this election with be as much about spinning as anything else. NC will have a full count election night. PA will probably look red until they count all the mail ballots, which could take days. Trump will declare victory early because the numbers will look good early.
Another state that will have totals early is Florida- they actually learned from the 2000 debacle. Due to abortion and marijuana initiatives on the ballot and a tight Senate race, this might be closer than might otherwise be the case. He loses Florida, it's game over. If it's razor-thin, that bodes well for Harris in other battlegrounds.
If Harris wins NC and holds MI and WI, she only needs one of GA, AZ, NV or PA. Frankly I'm betting she gets 3 of the 4, if not all of them. I don't think this race is as close as the polls would have you believe. And if I'm wrong, I'm not coming back from Hawaii. I'd probably be declared an enemy combatant anyway.

He also is opposed to abortion under any circumstances. He has run adds stating "abortion isn't about women's choices, it's about murdering babies because you can't keep your skirt down"*. Later he ran adds in which he is sitting with his wife looking sad and regretful stating that "“Over 33 years ago, before we were married and before we had kids, we had an abortion,” said Robinson. “It was the hardest moment we’ve ever made, and sadly we made the wrong one.” That is his stated reason for being so opposed to abortion under any circumstance.Lefty Specialist wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2024 9:57 am Pennsylvania may not decide it. He has also reportedly made this statement earlier this spring, 'This foolishness about Hitler disarming MILLIONS of Jews and then marching them off to concentration camps is a bunch of hogwash.'"
Mark Robinson gives Trump a run for his money as an extremist nut job. Of course, Trump not only endorses Robinson he has referred to him as "Martin Luther King on steroids."

So you're a presidential candidate and you go to a conference on Anti-Semitism.
Do you:
A) mouth vague platitudes about the wonderfulness
of Jews in America with a dash of 'we will always support Israel'
Or,
B) tell the assembled audience that if you lose it'll be the fault of you Jews. Especially you ungrateful ones who need to have your heads examined.

I realize this might be a dumb question but how does Robinson help Kamala’s chances in NC?
If undecideds don’t like Robinson couldn’t they just vote Dem for Governor and Trump for President?

They may be thinking that voters who don't like Robinson will stay home. That may make sense in a mid-term year, but not in a year with a Presidential election.
Re: 2024 Presidential Election - Take II
The general political principle is that weakness is one slot on the ballot affects the other slots. A weak presidential candidate hurts an otherwise strong gubernatorial candidate, by suppressing turnout and weakening brand loyalty to the party among those who do show up, and (in this case) vice versa.Centerfield wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2024 9:54 am I realize this might be a dumb question but how does Robinson help Kamala’s chances in NC?

When a really weak candidate (Christine O'Donnell) gained the Republican nomination for senator in Delaware (the seat vacated by then Senator Biden so he could become vice president) in 2010, her floundering campaign not only hurt other Republicans on the ballot in Delaware, it hurt Pennsylvania Republicans, too, as Delaware candidates have to broadcast their ads on Philadelphia stations.
So, sure, plenty can and will split their votes, but some (or, perhaps, many) won't (let's remember that President Trump endorsed this professed Nazi), and others will presumably lack the will to do anything. Enthusiasm is the factor that most polls miss. And it's a close state, where small edges matter.
Also, whenever I wonder why I waste time on the Internet, from now on, I will comfort myself with the thought that at least I'm not posting in forums on porn sites.
Re: 2024 Presidential Election - Take II
There may be only a handful of NC Republicans that stay home because of Robinson. But the margins are so slim that it will matter in the aggregate.
I certainly don't think this will decisively put Harris over the top in NC, but there isn't any way I can think of where the Robinson stories help Trump.

Re: 2024 Presidential Election - Take II
I've been hearing on MSNBC that North Carolina voters have often split their ticket , so this may not be a major factor. But every little bit helps.
