Mass Shootings

Post by MFS62 » Sun Aug 04, 2019 6:13 pm

El Paso and Dayton.

We're beyond thoughts and prayers and even the time for action.

And Trotsky Trump plays golf, attends a wedding at his resort, and tweets about a fight his sons are attending.

Then, and only then, does he tweet about sadness and say "we're going to take care of it".

It doesn't. It means Making All Guns Available. Because Moscow Mitch, Leningrad Lindsey, and Trotsky Trump need that NRA dime.

We can refer to them as "The Politburo".

Republicans are blaming this on video games and mental illness. The Texas Lieutenant governor said it was because they banned prayer in public schools. Really.

They're terrified to have it tied to White Nationalism, because that's their base.

if brown people were shooting white people, we'd have republican action in a hummingbird's hearbeat.

white men with fast guns - whatchagonnado!?

and all that bullshit about a good guy with a gun stopping a bad guy with a gun. in dayton, police responded in less than a minute. and the coward still killed 9 and injured 27. but, y'know, that's not at all because his weapon of war allowed him to rapidly spray deadly high velocity projectiles into a crowd of innocent unarmored people.

Plus under the current rules the shooters are the very definition of a "good guy with a gun" till they aren't.

At the end of his remarks today, Trump says "may God bless the memory of those who perished in TOLEDO and may God protect them"

Toledo, Dayton, what's the difference? Hey, look, squirrel!!!!

At least he got the state right and didn't say Daytona.

Dude's shot mentally and is increasingly (if fucking possible) unfit for office.

Biden got it wrong, too. And really, there's so damn many of them that it's difficult to get them all straight.

At least they did not claim it was Bowling Green, Kentucky. A tiny accomplishment.

People are focusing on Trump misspeaking with the name of the city (and Biden on the state) but he seemed to open the door to something substantial. He already pushed through the bump stock ban through executive order.

He tweeted:
We cannot let those killed in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, die in vain. Likewise for those so seriously wounded. We can never forget them, and those many who came before them. Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying.... this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!
If both sides of the aisle are willing to ignore their extremists and come with something substantial they both can take credit for, there could be an opportunity here.

If you were at the table, what would you want? What's realistic?

How about universal background checks? That's only got 85-90% American support but is being blocked by Moscow Mitch.

I think this is a good start.

I don’t see why anyone needs a military grade weapon.

I also think the guns are the means, and we need to do much more to address the cause in addition to addressing the means.

Yeah, like the one the House passed in February that Mitch blocked and Trump said he'd veto anyway?

Trump said he'd want to marry gun legislation to immigration reform so the dems would refuse, and he could blame inactivity on them. He's a transparent, disingenuous asshole.

No we don't. It's the guns. The fucking guns. Not the video games or the Mexicans or your pastor or anything else. It's the guns. But I agree with you that Lefty's post is a good start. And if, as you say, you also agree, it'd be nice if you put your money where your mouth is and vote for the pols who might enact such a policy. But you probably never did and you won't in 2020. You'll vote for Trump again, or at best, vote for some candidate that's not from one of the two major parties, thus wasting your vote for all realistic purposes.

And who are the extremist Democrats on this issue, and if they exist, what actual impact are they having here?

This is right. And I think a good place to start is to unify, and unquestionably condemn the far right, and their racist, hateful agenda. To end this war on "fake news" and stop the scapegoating of immigrant communities.

Let's start by voting out the asshole in office promoting all of this.

Hey, I'd personally like to ban all guns but I'm not in a position of power in the Democratic party. We had an assault weapon ban once. It was allowed to expire in 2004. If reinstating it is 'extremist' then we're pretty far gone as a country. Because these guns are the biggest problem. As violent a country as we are, the biggest issue is the easy availability of a weapon that can kill dozens of people in seconds.

Yes, it's about the guns.
Other countries have mental illness. Only America has mass shootings.
Other countries have angry, frustrated people. Only America has mass shootings.
Other countries have video games. Only America has mass shootings.
Other countries have white supremacist movements. Only America has mass shootings.
Other countries ban prayer in public schools. Only America has mass shootings.

It's pretty simple. When you solve it as a problem, removing all the other factors, it comes down to the easy availability of weapons of mass destruction. It's why we have these mass shootings and other countries don't.

After what's gone on the last three years with Trump anyone who comes on here
(or anywhere) and tries to spin that speech this morning as something good and
positive has to be in bed with him and his ilk so I'll stop shouting at the clouds.

What do you define as extreme positions that elected Democrats hold with respect to guns?

On health care, taxation, trade policy, immigration, how to address climate change — essentially, the other major issues of the day — I have little trouble identifying extreme positions from both parties. (This is not, of course, an endorsement of any one position).

But here? It is difficult to identify extreme positions from the Democrats. The country is besieged by domestic terrorists killing people en masse. Republicans are unwilling to act.

I am happy to be educated on this if I’m missing something.

I think California Rep. Eric Swalwell called for confiscation during his presidential bid, as an example, and I don't think the other Democratic candidates went there.

But that's not the point I was trying to make. You're at the table. What do you? The domestic terrorists need to be stopped. But we had 10 shootings in five days in my city. None of those shooters used military grade weapons. How do you stop that, too? Background checks, to me, are a no-brainer. Buy backs? Licensing? When we say better gun laws, what does that look like? I'm in agreement with you, but I'm not sure what would be most effective.
