Jennie-O Turkey Pastrami just $6.99/lb at Shop-Rite.
Gas $2.71/gallon at the Shell station on the Garden State Parkway near me. Deflation at work.

Healthier and cheaper works for me, the shopper not so much lol...
That's pretty good gas prices there for Shell. Mobil and Shell are
always at a premium here, especially Mobil.
Joisey has always been cheaper gas than New York, Thanks, Mario.

the worst part about buying pastrami is not the price, but the long long wait for them to slice the damn thing. it's like 200 slices per pound, damnit.

Re: Inflation 2024
No, it's the price. $21.99/lb. is, historically, sky high. Food prices are still rising. Pretty much every single time I go food shopping, I notice that a food item that I buy from time to time has gone up in price. And not just a teeny, tiny bit. More like at least 15%.metsmarathon wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 8:05 am the worst part about buying pastrami is not the price, but the long long wait for them to slice the damn thing. it's like 200 slices per pound, damnit.
And 200 slices per pound must come out to microscopically thin slices. I like my cold cuts thin sliced, generally, and I've had some fights over this over the course of my life with incompetent deli slicers, but 200 slices per pound is like at the molecular level.

Even my mom spent over $100 last week.
It’s nuts.

Frozen pie crusts (pkg of 2) - $5.89.
Flour and water, not even baked. Yikes!

KB: Wal-Mart run was $167.
KC: What did you get?
KB: Stuff, monthly stuff I guess.
KC: Excellent. Only $80 more than two years ago.
On a happier note - I got gas today for $3.13. In Westchester County, NY.

Crosby pizza is charging $28 for a large pepperoni pie, I think some of the highest inflation is for pizza places , their costs have gone way up
Re: Inflation 2024
Gas getting cheap here again, approaching $3.00 woo hoo. I hope that
trend translates to heating oil because we're gonna need a large fill-up
soon. Scallops, on the other, hand were $26.99/lb pound this morning
at my fish guy. That's not a typo.

Shell station on the GS Parkway now $2.69, 2 cents less than in January. Deflation at work.
Don't eat scallops so I don't care how expensive/cheap they are.

Whoopi knows why inflation exists:
"Your pocketbook is bad not because the Bidens did anything, not because the economy is bad; your grocery bills are high because the folks who run the grocery stores are pigs ("and no one has articulated that" echoes [some woman] on 'The View')
"Gas is high not because the Bidens didn't try to help but because the folks who control that decided, 'I want my money'.
Now there's a woman who understands economics!!

Aldi's has recently had both frozen shrimp and scallops for $8/lb (technically $6 for a 12 oz package). If they're fake I'm OK with that

Re: Inflation 2024
Its easy to mock Whoopi. She kinda set herself up for it. She's on the panel of The View, where she gets to play know-it-all in front of a National audience on everything under the sun --- pontificating on everything from where to buy the best cupcakes to what the nation's top nuclear scientists should consider when building the next bomb. All this influence derived in large part from her early stint as a comedienne whom, if you ask me, was never that funny or even articulate in the first place.Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 10:06 pm Whoopi knows why inflation exists:

She's obviously out of her depth here. But so what? So are all of us, too. And there's ample evidence to support the idea that post pandemic inflation, or greedflation, is the result of deliberate price gouging. Corporate profits are up and higher than before Covid and have exceeded wage increases over that time.

Re: Inflation 2024
Price "gouging" is a very specific, and illegal, thing dealing with the jacking up of prices in times of shortages or emergencies: bottled water when normal supplies are interrupted; during the great toilet paper shortage of 2020; snow shovels in the aftermath of a big storm, and that sort of thing.
What Whoopi (and Kamala for that matter) are selling is the idea that a certain price is deemed 'too high' on account of it being higher than it used to be, or simply because they say it is which brings with it the logical assumption that they somehow know, from the outside looking in, where the correct prices should be making those charging anything else the villains. These "pigs", as Whoopi calls them, would also need to be in cahoots with their competition otherwise their price jacking would wind up losing them a lot of customers especially in the grocery business where profit margins are thin and competition thick.
and btw Whoopi (if you're reading), most of the recent posts on this thread are about how low gas prices are at the moment so I guess 'those in control' all decided at once that they don't want your money nearly as much as they used to.

Not sure what your point is. If you're nitpicking to say that it isn't "gouging", then fine, I'll think of a better word for it. But if you wanna deny that there's so-called "greedflation " because the college textbooks tell you that competition would prevent greedflation from ever happening, then whatever . Go ahead. I guess corporate profits aren't higher than before the pandemic. And companies aren't using Covid disruptions as a pretext to jack up prices higher than they ought to be jacked up. Why would companies lower prices when their profit margins are higher than ever?Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2024 4:45 pm Price "gouging" is a very specific, and illegal, thing dealing with the jacking up of prices in times of shortages or emergencies: bottled water when normal supplies are interrupted; during the great toilet paper shortage of 2020; snow shovels in the aftermath of a big storm, and that sort of thing.

It'd be wonderful if it all worked out as neatly as it's supposed to work out according to the college textbooks but the reality is that a business will try and take as much fucking money from you as is possible while giving you as little as possible in return.

Re: Inflation 2024
My point is to try and push back on this notion that there's a 'correct' price for items, one that's universally known and agreed upon, and that there needs to be some sort of retribution or government action taken against those charging a higer price. If you think someone is selling something at the 'wrong' price then don't buy it. If it's something you need or want then buy it somewhere where it's being sold at the right price. And if everyone is selling it at the supposed wrong price then, absent massive collusion and price-fixing, it's not really the wrong price, is it?

Re: Inflation 2024
Well then Whoopi may have been a lot closer to the truth than you gave her credit for. But now the madman is going to fix it all. The guy who's selling his imbecile followers ugly $500.00 sneakers and crappy $100K watches. The guy who sold the public $25K Trump University scholarship that were worthless. The greediest businessman out there. Because the high prices are Biden's fault.Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2024 2:26 pm My point is to try and push back on this notion that there's a 'correct' price for items, one that's universally known and agreed upon, and that there needs to be some sort of retribution or government action taken against those charging a higer price.
