I love that the Yankees had to relive 2004 all over again to just end up losing in 5.
And being on the wrong end of yet another historic comeback. Love it.

Re: In World Series Thread - 2024
I can think of only one other playoff run that was sustained by just three starting pitchers, and that was when the playoffs was intentionally stuffed with extra off days
so the teams weren't required to go with 'bullpen days' in order to keep things going.
Ladies and Gentlemen, your 2009 New York Yanquis:
Round one (starters): Sabathia, <day off> AJ Burnett, < day off> Pettitte
< four days off>
Round two: Sabathia, Burnett, <day off>, Pettitte, Sabathia, <day off> AJ Burnett, <two days off> Pettitte
<two days off>
World Series: Sabathia, Burnett, <day off> Pettitte, Sabathia, Burnett, <day off>, Pettitte
There was, of course, no way of knowing in advance who that system might benefit but it wound up playing perfectly into the Yanquis
hands who were woefully thin on starting pitching that year but hit upon a playoff structure where that wasn't a detriment.

It's happened on occasion. As just one example, the 1969 Mets won the championship with just a three-man post-season rotation of Seaver, Koosman and Gentry.Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 12:17 am I can think of only one other playoff run that was sustained by just three starting pitchers, and that was when the playoffs was intentionally stuffed with extra off days....
The 1986 Mets almost did it. Gooden, Darling and Ojeda started 12 of the Mets' 13 post-season games. Fernandez got a start in the playoffs.

Dodgers beat the Mets in 6. They beat the Yanx in 5.
And the Mets didn't have a horrible choke job anywhere along the way.

Thank God for this , I went to bed at 5-5 , woke up around 1am and checked the score, very happily went back to sleep
Re: In World Series Thread - 2024
My wife participates in a Wednesday night trivia league at a local brew pub with her coworkers. I rarely attend because I don't like to drink late on a weeknight and I find most of the bar trivia to be dull - questions are all in the "you know it or you don't" category as a rule and don't provoke much thought, and I've ignored the better part of the last 15 years of popular music, TV and movies.
But she asked me nicely if I'd go with her yesterday, so I consented.
Didn't that also mean the MFYs would be showing on two giant fucking TV's and that the place would erupt each time they scored? Which they did repeatedly while we were there? Ugh.
I came home and went to bed fully expecting a game 6 and return trip to Cali. So a pleasant surprise to wake up and find out they lost lol

Interestingly that is too bad due to the fact that the Dodgers have still yet to win a World Championship in Chavez Ravine since 1963!

Too bad you weren't still there for the top of the 5th to hear the Yanqui fans erupting in a very different kind of way:
Single (1st LAD hit of game) - Error - Error - K - K - mental fuck-up that should have ended the inning but instead allowed a run - 2 RBI 1B - 2 RBI 2B
They still would have been loud, but you'd have enjoyed it more.

Hey, American League fans. Before the DH, players had to lean how to hit AND field.Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 7:50 am Single (1st LAD hit of game) - Error - Error - K - K - mental fuck-up that should have ended the inning but instead allowed a run - 2 RBI 1B - 2 RBI 2B
Remember?
Weren't too many fans yelling :Oh, Captain, my Captain". Were there?

Glorious read in the Wall Street Journal! "A Nightmare World Series for the Yankees Bumbles Away in the Bronx"

https://www.wsj.com/sports/baseball/wor ... =wknd_pos1
Jason Gay brings it!
For the New York Yankees, it is already a World Series to forget—and when I say forget, I mean burn and stash the entire event inside a permanently sealed memory cave impenetrable by humans, robots and even the most determined squirrels.
...
Falling behind three games to nothing, underperforming stars, sloppy errors, mental blunders, questionable pitching moves, a pair of buffoons trying to wrestle the ball out of an opposing player’s glove (more on them in a minute), a horrendous collapse after taking a lead in Game 5, catcher’s interference, a balk, watching an old National League nemesis crawl back to celebrate and spill Rob Manfred’s finest Champagne on their home diamond…
The sole Yankee victory in Game 4 briefly stirred emotions. So did a mortifying episode early in that game, when a pair of Yankee fans held and tried to pry a baseball from Dodger Mookie Betts’s glove when Betts leapt skyward over a fence to catch a foul ball.
Honestly, I can’t figure out what’s worse: A grown adult thinking ripping a baseball from an opposing player is an acceptable (or safe) behavior, or the strange 12 hours in which these men were elevated as lovable New York outlaws who may have catalyzed a historic Yankee comeback.
Give me a break. Bar them for life. Better yet, give them Jets season tickets.
(Could you imagine the reaction of Yankee fans if a pair of Dodgers fans tried to similarly maul a ball away from a Yankee? The city would never stop screaming.)
The grim reality is that the Mookie shakedown is probably going to be the most-watched clip from this Series, next to Freeman’s Game 1 walk-off Grand Slam. The Yankee highlight reel is very thin.

I don't understand why those two clowns would be lauded as heroes. Unless I'm missing something (I haven't been watching, and only saw the clip that batmagadanleadoff posted in this thread) they didn't affect the outcome of the game at all. Betts caught the ball in his glove and the batter was ruled out on a fan interference call. All they really accomplished was that they outed themselves as a couple of louts.

Actually the batter was out via a clean catch.Betts caught the ball in his glove and the batter was ruled out on a fan interference call.
The interference was after the fact and simply meant it was a dead ball so no runners could advance, which didn't matter as there were no runners.
The ball grabbing schtick was really just thuggery, plain and simple.

Re: In World Series Thread - 2024
This had nothing to do with the AL or the DH (which you may have noticed is no longer exclusive to the AL). The two physical errors were both by good fielders.
The killer in that inning was the mental screw up by Cole. He seemed to think it would be an easy play for Rizzo to make unassisted so he looked like he was heading towards the dugout rather than towards 1B. An out there would have ended the inning with no runs allowed despite the back-to-back errors.
Instead it allowed a run and kept the bases loaded for the #3 & 4 hitters who both promptly dropped two-RBI hits on his ass and the game was tied.
5-5 vs 5-0 because Betts hustled while Cole watched.
oe: 5-5 vs 5-0 because Cole fiddled while Betts burned would have been the better line to use there.

I am convinced the Mets would have been the skanks in the world series
The was a helluva fifth inning Michael Kay
The DH has been around 54 years and ain't leaving. Consider that some people do like it
Maybe not in this room but still...

It's downright cruel how it all went down. Cole was cruising. Yanks were up 5-0. Everyone was already thinking about Game 6. Thinking hey, it's a long shot, but maybe. Just maybe. After going down 3 games to none. You could feel that slight glimmer of hope creeping back in.
Then the errors. Bases loaded no one out. You could see the doubt creep in. But then Cole responded. Back to back Ks. The place was on fire. The ground ball to first, and everyone started to exhale, until they realized that no one was covering. Just brutal.
And then, they took the lead again! And they started to think they dodged a bullet. The Dodgers pitchers are running on fumes. Only to see it come crashing down a final time.
Brutal. Cruel. Beautiful. All at the same time.

It came a bit later than many of us would have liked, but MFY Elimination Day is the most wonderful time of the year. That it came in such glorious fashion with that epic 5th inning meltdown made it worth the wait. I'll be smiling all day.
By the way, the last time that team won a world series, Trump lost.

Re: In World Series Thread - 2024
I watched the 7 minute recap on MLB's web site this morning, primarily to watch their collapse. Totally self-induced which of course makes it better.
Judge's flub.
A bad choice by the SS to try and get the force at 3B.
Cole not covering.
I also can appreciate a team that ultimately wins a title by getting two key sac flies to tie the game + take the lead. That's really how you win most of the time, not in a sexy way but by producing runs as you're able. And not leaving those scoring chances on the table.
I did turn off the recap after the last strike. I still ain't about watching any non Mets team celebrate a WS win.

I agree. Those two jackasses should be treated no differently than if they ran onto the field and punched a player in the face.Benjamin Grimm wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 8:45 am I don't understand why those two clowns would be lauded as heroes. YS security has long permitted a degree of lawlessness among the largely young/loud male crowd in the RF stands. Harassment, intimidation, beer showers and the like were often ignored by security even if the aggrieved party wasn't an out of town fan. So the idea that these two felt perfectly entitled to do what they did isn't the least bit surprising. Reportedly frequent complaints have been lodged by those sitting behind these two louts that they stand up for much of the game and block everyone's view.batmagadanleadoff wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 1:17 pmI agree. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Yankees essentially aid and abet the Dodgers rally by repeatedly booting the ball and making poor decisions. You can't give your opponent 6 outs in an inning without it biting you in the ass. It was glorious to watch.
When did the choices get so hard
With so much more at stake
Life gets mighty precious
When there's less of it to waste

It just sunk in.
The winning rally involved a player named Mookie beating out a ball to first base.
