Vinny Nittoli has become quite the hot potato, appearing for five different teams as a big-leaguer, but throwing so much as nine innings for absolutely none of them. He appeared for the Mets in 2023, signed away with Oakland, and kept getting caught in the waiver trap, throwing a few innings each for the A's and for Baltimore before getting reclaimed by the Mets to finish out the year as a Syracusean.

Don't go making fun of Andre Scrubb's name, as he's generally listed at 270 pounds. He spent most of the season on the Injured List, getting 11 effective innings with Binghamton and three more not-so-effective innings with Syracuse.

Catcher Austin Allen also spent much of the year rehabbing, but hit well enough in 46 games at Syracuse. Logan Porter, his fellow member of the catching community managed to divide his time among three organizations, hitting overall pretty good, but doing his worst work for the Mets.

CarCort has been with the Mets organization since 2018. They actually drafted him twice, in the 20th round in 2016 out of high school and in the third round in 2018 out of the SEC. He doesn't really have a standout skill, but his middling power and better-than-fair batting eye will probably get him to the bigs sooner or later, and it probably wouldn't be shocking to see him break camp as an original Sacramento A.

If nothing else, Montas-for-Brazobán on the roster keeps the Mets Dominican factor unchanged (for now, at least).

A few days before the Mets stuck it to the Yankees by stealing their prized outfielder, they foreshadowed the quaked to come by inking their closer and announcing he would be a starter for the Mets. The most immediate outcome of slotting Clay Holmes into the rotation is that nobody needs to strain to hope that Paul Blackburn will be fully healed by opening day in order to have five starters ready to go.

More transactions will likely come to diminish any Blackburn need, but this is the key one, as it pushes needing him out of the best-case scenario.

This is all a little complicated. The Mets were hanging onto some international bonus slot money space (whatever) for Roki Sasaki, but it turned out that, as Sasaki's posting was being held off until the winter meetings (today, in fact), it was highly unlikely that he would be signed before December 15, when the the 2024 international signing period ends. Any team gobbling Sasaki (and wouldn't Gobbling Sasaki be a great name for a second-stage band at Lollapalooza?) would then have to wait for the 2025 signing period, beginning January 15.

So, as the Rays thought they still had somebody they could sign, and the Mets had kept powder un-necessarily dry, the Mets sent that extra dough to Tampa for a Sean Harney, a player who is an older prospect after five years at college (thank you, COVID), but totally progressing nicely through the minors.

Also, he's Rule V Draft eligible, so he could be gone as soon as he has arrived.

Yuhi Sako is unusual in that he's a Japanese-born pitcher with no record of playing in any Japanese professional league. Yes, the Hobie dream is but one of the phantasms that died far too unceremoniously on Rule V Day. Unfortunately, the dinner hour had struck before Mets Roster Central staff could reflect on the stunning loss of talent that day wrought.



Landon Marceaux missed all of 2024 due injury represents something of a crossroads, as he was one of two pitchers obtained from the Angels for Eduardo Escobar, launching the Mets' Great Selloff of 2023. It really was a watermark both ways, as Escobar had the proven vet status for the Angels as they were desperately trying to stay in the playoff hunt as part of their plan to retain Shohei Otahni. Escobar skidded toward the end of his career with sub-replacement production, there was no playoffs and no retention, so the Mets ended up on top of this deal pretty early.

The other arm coming from the Angels was Coleman Crow, and before the 2024 season, he was somehow turned into two established major leaguers in Adrian Houser and Tyrone Taylor, so despite none of the deal's principals — Marceaux, Crow, and Escobar — appearing in 2024, the Mets are still garnering productivity from the deal in centerfield.



Jawilme Ramirez had a strong 2024 season, climbing from St. Lucie to Brooklyn and even throwing one (shutout) inning for Syracuse. Part of that ascent was the Mets transitioning him from starting toward relieving over the year, and his success was rewarded with a coveted assignment to the Arizona Fall League, so the cursed Cardinals not only rob the Mets of the player and the development they have invested in him, but the Mets also end up wasting one of the few AFL slots they get every fall. Boo.



Mike Vasil is not here for your "Vaseline" cracks. He’s heard them all before and it hasn’t stopped him getting to the threshold of being an MLB pitcher. He just reminds everybody that his name is one letter off of being the same as that of an all-time Met great.

Unfortunately, he’s kind of been stuck on that threshold, putting up a 5.30 ERA in 73 AAA innings in 2023 and a 6.04 figure in 2024 in 134 innings. Control had never been much of a problem for him before, but it’s really been catching up with him at Syracuse. It makes him a perfect candidate for the Phillies' pen, though.



Nolan Clenney came to the Mets out of indy ball back in 2021. He had hoped to be the first Nolan on the team since Nolan Ryan was traded back in 1971. (Were not counting the brief tenure of 1973 reserve catcher Joe Nolan.) Dreams, however, are not something the Cubs particularly care about, and so they stole him away from the Mets, breaking his heart.



Hobie Harris had even higher aspirations, hoping to become the team’s first Hobie since their very first acquisition, having taken catcher Hobie Landrith with their maiden pick in the expansion draft. That was among the shorter-lived dreams, as Harris had only joined the organization two weeks earlier, getting a minor-league contract along with a camp invite. We are curious if the Red Sox have any professional obligation to honor that invitation, because we know from their thieving ways that honor does not come naturally to them.

Anyhow, the guy has consistently given up a large share o’ walks, so his potential for anything more than fleeting appearances seemed limited.



Nathan Lavender, a spring training star last season, is the biggest loss here, looking like a likely 2024 Met before an injury ended his season. He's also a punch in the gut because the Mets are thin on left-handed relief, and finally, because he and Zebulon Vermillion had a chance to add a lot of color to future Mets bullpens.

It remains to be seen how creative the Rays get with parking him on injured lists to keep from having to use him in 2024, but I hope he cries out in horror if they try to keep him from playing for a second straight year.



Joseph Yabbour (follow him at “@Yabbour_Dabbour_Doo“) only has two seasons (64 innings) as a pro behind him, but this is already his third MLB organization, a title the White Sox barely qualify to hold, but unfortunately, they qualified enough to pick a sexy young Venezuelan prospect right out of the Mets' pocket.



Drake Osborn, rather than be a heavy-metal/Canadian hip-hop crossover, was a low-average/decent-power catcher who may or may not have taken a step forward with an improved season at high-A and AA in 2024.

His potential seemed limited, but the Mets are thin at catching at the upper levels, so they’ll probably have to bring in one more free agent backstop this spring.



Junior Tilien is a low-average/solid-fielding utility infielder with a little bit of pop but not much base path speed. He knew how to turn on a pitch and could have been productive with maturity, but the first team to find that out will be the Tigers, it seems.

Alas.



And finally, we get to the one guy the Mets get in exchange for the nine (NINE!) guys they lost. Michael Hobbs should open up the season as one of the top relievers in Bingo, and holy smokes, he’s trying to out Sean Reid-Foley Sean Reid-Foley, trying to develop a full Rollie Fingers mustache waxing game.

Signing two guys on the same day who labored last year as Doosan Bears can't be a coincidence, right? But Brandon Waddell is the bear who waddles in on a minor-league deal, but while utility man Jared Young joins up as a member of the MLB roster. Young still has two minor-league options, but his experience and track record of productivity edge him slightly ahead of Luisangel Acuña on the depth chart for the moment.

That Canadian flag beneath Young's name doesn't mean he hails from a Toronto suburb. He's from a small town way out west, about halfway between Calgary and Vancouber.

I don't know what kind of receiver Chris Williams is, but his versatility and his three-true-outcomes offensive profile shoots him right to the top of the Syracuse backstop depth chart. I know that's sobering news for Jakson Reetz fans everywhere, but looking at CW's stats at AAA over the last three years, it's hard to see why he hasn't got called up yet, unless it's got something to do with the fuckton amount of times he strikes out.

Chris' middle name is Kenichi, which suggests some Japanese heritage, so maybe he's got a little (or even a lot?) of the language, which might make him invaluable as a potential catcher for Kodai Senga and Roki Sasaki.

We project the roster here, knowing there are plenty of things that can't be projected, but the Mets acquisition behavior of late suggests that they are preparing to open the season with a six-person starting rotation, at a time of the season when a team historically barely has needed a fifth. That suggests that the return of Sean Manaea should lead to the dropping of a reliever. The Mets Roster Central has been diligently researching the status of Tyler Zuber and our work suggests he does indeed have a remaining option year, and that makes him far and away the easiest character to remove from the roster, as his alleged lack of options was his only claim to be an opening-day Met. Having an option puts about seven other guys ahead of him.

This appears to be less about bad data and more about one bad reference.

What is being displayed here is data from a column listing the year in which the players would be eligible for minor-league free agency, should they, you know, find themselves off the big-league roster.

For most of these players that is hardly a primary concern, and the next update will correctly list their soonest year of potential eligibility for MLB free agency.

While others are fretting over 2025, Mets execs are already shoring up 2026, signing a guy expected to miss all or most of the coming season as he recovers from UCL surgery.

His signing includes an invite to spring training, but that would presumably be just a formality, as he won't actually be climbing any mounds. But one would guess the better facilities and higher class of associations are worth something.

Jeremiah Jackson came over to the Mets during the 2023 selloff when the Met sent Dominic Leone to the Angels. He'd been having a decent minor-league career, climbing steadily through the ranks every year, but the Mets surprised him by returning him to AA in 2024, and he surprised them by having his easily his worst season as a pro.

Mike Brosseau joined Syracuse during the season in 2024, and despite a bunch (244 regular-season games) of MLB experience and a strong performance for the Syracuse Mets over 90 games, he was never even rumored as a potential addition to the Mets roster. It's easy to forget — because most things about the Rays are easy to forget — but he was a post-season hero for Tampa Bay, hitting a series-winning, deciding-game homerun off of Aroldis Chapman, who had been suspended earlier in the season for throwing too close to the head of — you guessed it — Mike Brosseau.
