well, if he has been in the loop up until now, i suspect he no longer is.batmagadanleadoff wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 12:39 pmExactly.Benjamin Grimm wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 12:36 pm Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of that. The manager doesn't need to be in the loop on these negotiations, but that doesn't mean he isn't. It really depends on what internal relationship he has with Stearns and Cohen.

Re: Go Get Juan Soto
It's such a strange negotiation. With the opt out, or I'd imagine, multiple opt-outs, it's tough to know how much the back end of that contract even matters. Let's say you give him 15 years. In all likelihood, that will moot when he opts out in 3,4,5 years, and if for some reason he's injured at his first opt out, he might use his second one later on.
I would guess that in addition to the dollars and years, there needs to be time to work out the specifics. How much is the signing bonus, etc. I would guess a team willing to front load the contract (meaning the years before the opt out) would have a significant advantage.
That can be where the Mets have an advantage. Front load the contract, tack on years to the back end bringing down the luxury tax, knowing that Soto will opt out in 3-5 years anyway.

Both Mets & Yanx (and maybe others) have offers in the $710 to $730 range [Jon Hey, Man - NY Post]
The Yankees and Mets both remain heavily involved in the five-team Juan Soto Derby, with both clubs recently upping offers into the $710 million-$730 million range — MLB record territory — as it’s believed the sweepstakes could be within a day or two of an historic conclusion.

Absolute madness , but hope we get it done
Re: Go Get Juan Soto
I can't imagine that he's in any hurry to wrap things up if five teams are still in active pursuit.

I fear the Mets are bidding against themselves
Not surprised if the Yankees win this

Can't believe the Blue Jays are hanging around at these levels.
The answer to the question "Can people really be that stupid?" is always "Yes."

Why? They're one of baseball 's very wealthiest organizations. The Jays' owner is almost as wealthy as Steve Cohen.Lefty Specialist wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 9:03 pm Can't believe the Blue Jays are hanging around at these levels.

Re: Go Get Juan Soto
So in the end, all that stuff about the Yankees having an advantage was false. The Yankees just need to get close, blah blah blah.
The Yankees bid far more than I ever thought they would. And if you told me from the beginning that the Yankees would offer $760M, I would have said he's taking it.
I guess in the end he really didn't want to be there.

And if the Yankees did bid $760 million, then the reports of the Mets being committed to go $5 million over the next-highest offer seems to have support.

I think some of the rumors said they'd go $50 million over the best offer.
Among other reasons to be glad about this, I'm happy that my Google news feed will no longer have articles about Juan Soto predictions. But there will still be a lot of other crap.

How sour are those grapes?

And perhaps there are some within the Yankees organization that feel a weight off their shoulders, knowing they aren’t locked into such a massive financial commitment to one player and can now try to spread money around to improve a roster that, including Soto, fell to the Dodgers in the World Series.
“I would think there are a lot of people in their room who are like, ‘We dodged a bullet. I’m glad we didn’t do this,'” Post baseball columnist Joel Sherman said on the “Pinstripe Post” live show Sunday night after the 26-year-old Soto agreed to the deal with the Mets.

"Spread the money around".
If you take the money that the Yanks bid on Soto ($47.5 AAV), you can get like Corbin Burnes and Michael Conforto.
