Don't be fooled by the ironic name. "Junior" Santos is listed at 6'7" and 245, and if anything, he's grown since those measurements were taken. Despite his imposing size, however, what's missing from his repertoire has been high strikeout numbers.

Eddy Alvarez is a useful peg looking for the right hole. He's a fit for somebody with a particular need somewhere. Like Luis Guillorme, he's a thick-bearded reserve infielder who grew up in Florida while maintaining a strong identity with his Latin American heritage. Unlike, Luis, his leggies are his strong suit, rather than his hands. Like Luis, I don't think he'll find a resting place with Atlanta.

The Mets have near-MLB-ready prospects in both the infield and the outfield, but down lower, things have grown thin, as they still haven't replaced some of the players at the AA (infield) and high-A (outfield) levels that they have lost through releases and free agency in the offseason. So these two moves should push some of the higher-level talent down toward those levels.

It's worth noting that reportage on these signings have come from reliable sources, so Mets Roster Central feels confident that they are real, but they haven't been officially announced yet. It's purely an educated assumption that they have been invited to spring training, but MRC staff aren't truly certain.

Yonny Hernández is very much lacking in anything resembling power. His bat, in fact, can entirely disappear over long stretches. (Witness, for instance, his 2-for-49 campaign in winter ball during the 2023-2024 offseason, but when he does hit, he's shown a solid on-base ability that cannot be ignored.

Travis Swaggerty comes to the Mets looking to add to his career MLB total of one hit. He's mostly played center through his minor-league career but played right last season during a strong year in indy ball.

Jesse Winker is certainly a player the Mets (most any team, really) can find some use for, but he becomes the seventh outfield-exclusive player on their roster without options, so the roster is getting beyond pinchy.

This suggests corner infielder Jared Young gets kicked to the outside looking in, but MRC does not want to spend a big chunk of the season again looking at a roster with only five infielders. And while still expect a first-string firstbaseman to join the party, who that knocks out (a starting pitcher? a reliever?) is very much unclear.

Our immediate suspicion is that the Mets are looking to (a) shed the contract brave and noble Starling Marte before the season begins, and/or (b) get one or more of those outfielders onto a crash course in firstbasing. The first place they might look is Winker, who has played 13 games at the cold corner in the minors.

Shinny Shinny Cocoa Pop was a very interesting grab as the Mets were collecting minor-league additions last season, coming to the team with a major-league contract, a triple-digit fastball, and a mechanical problem the Mets hoped to iron out, but he opened the season in the minors, hurt his shoulder and when he came off the Injured List, was DFA'd and passed through waivers, and now we've arrived at the end of his story.

We've reached the part of the off-season where anybody the team adds — even Mike Piazza — will likely mean a painful dose of medicine at the other end.

A.J. Minter takes up the 40th spot on the roster, so even if we displace somebody with options from the roster, somebody else will have to be exposed.

The Mets, by the way, have already had an A.J. — A.J. Ramos, bullpenner from 2017 and 2018, and so still haven't been able to expand their J. collection beyond A.J. (Ramos), C.J. (Nitkowski), D.J. (Carrasco, Dozier), J.J. (Putz), P.J. (Conlon), R.J. (Alvarez), and T.J. (McFarland, Rivera).
