So today is our anniversary and Lefty Jr got us a Cameo from Keith Hernandez with congratulations. It was peak dippy Keith, in a Union Jack T-shirt looking like he'd just rolled out of bed. It was hilarious.

Re: This and That - 2025
So Keith jumped on the 'Will Record Greetings for Food' bandwagon, huh?
I knew Pete Rose did that in his later years but I wouldn't have thought Keith in the same orbit as 'Anything for a buck' Pete.
But I guess there's an App for that now which makes it easy to manage and therefore too tempting (and lucrative) to resist.

Eating a giant king crab leg on the subway is now officially on my
bucket list. Of course, I'd bring a container of melted butter.

I think it's fine that a rocket carrying an all-female 'crew', including the likes of Katy Perry and Gayle King, became the first to reach the very edge of space.
But did they have to bring them all back?

How big are the world's biggest rodents? Meet the Capybara.

Hundreds of Giant Rodents ‘Conquered’ This Town. Now What?
The world’s largest rodent is multiplying in — and dividing — one of Argentina’s most exclusive gated communities.

Read it all at https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/worl ... omies.htmlLuciano Sampietro lifted a three-foot aluminum pipe to his lips and blew, sending a blow dart laced with sedatives, muscle relaxers and painkillers toward the world’s largest rodent, lounging near an artificial pond.
The veterinarian’s target, a roughly 110-pound alpha male capybara, was hit in the hind leg. Mr. Sampietro fired again and struck a female. Within 15 minutes, workers dressed in the tan outfits of safari guides scooped up the sleeping patients.
But they were too late: The female was already pregnant. So they injected the male with a drug designed to stop him from impregnating any more.
Yes, in the wealthy suburbs of Buenos Aires, they are sterilizing the capybaras.
The rotund, laid-back, dog-sized rodents native to South America have recently become a darling of the modern internet. They have catapulted to the top of the unofficial adorable animal rankings via countless videos showing them mellow, plump and perfectly happy to let monkeys and ducks ride on their backs. Their image adorns backpacks and stuffed animals, and in Tokyo, tourists pay premiums to feed them carrots at capybara cafes.
But to some people in one corner of their native land, the cuddly capybara has become a menace.
Since the pandemic, “carpinchos,” as they are known in Argentina, have proliferated in Nordelta, a ritzy, picturesque gated community of 45,000 people north of Buenos Aires. When residents retreated indoors in 2020, the capybaras began to colonize the manicured neighborhoods, finding green grass, fresh water and no predators, according to biologists hired by the community.

A follow-up from the Hurricane Helene thread:
But curious.

Since then Baxter has been manufacturing the solution in their labs in other countries. I have been receiving the solution made in Mexico. My last shipment had solution made in China. I wonder if the tariff policies had anything to do with it. Seems too short a period to matter.MFS62 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 1:21 pmNo. The solution comes in sterile bags pf 2.5 liters of specific solution strength. and I use two per night. Baxter is the sole supplier of the bags. I get boxes delivered every month directly from their warehouse. The local dialysis center gets them from Baxter for all of their patients.
But thanks.

My son took his girlfriend to a local place (somewhere in upstate NY) for a day of capybara petting and feeding. They had a great time. Big fuckin rats, I say

It was 40 years ago today that a new formula was introduced which the company was calling 'New Coke'
And wasn't that a good idea.

New Coke is an amazing story. It was like a farcical British physical comedy in that despite everything going wrong, it accomplished everything it was meant to accomplish.
And what could be a more 80s story than a massive and massively unhealthy multinational like Coca-Cola failing upwards?
