Vaccinated! Second dose, it turns out, will be four weeks later. Or at least that's the current understanding. I'll get an e-mail in about a week that will allow me to schedule the second dose.
Some states allow you to register for the second when you schedule the first. Some states schedule the second one for you when you get the first shot. But that would be too logical.
And, yes, the reaction to the second one is often (but not much) worse.

i am apparently doing a super-shit job of getting vaccination appintments. my 82-year old mom is still without her first. on her behalf, i'm signed up for all the relevant appointment alert systems that appear to apply, but don't get any notifications.
A friend of mine in Morris Plains just posted "Who needs vaccines?" on facebook. She might have a way in. I just texted her.
The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.
So if Biden pulls this off, we'll have saved summer and all kids will be back in school come September. That will be enormous. There'll still be deaths from COVID, but there won't be any excuses- those who don't get vaccinated will only have themselves to blame.
Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.
Except that a lot of people who aren't white, middle-class, college-educated professionals don't have access to basic healthcare much less vaccines. But they probably live in "red states," so fuck them, right?
They're vaccinating the apes at the San Diego Zoo.
I know that there aren't many apes at the Zoo, and that it's important to protect the apes, but this sends a terrible message while there are still humans who are desperately trying to get vaccinated. Why don't they just vaccinate the humans who come into close contact with the apes? There can't be that many of them. And if the apes decide to go to a supermarket or a restaurant, make sure that they wear masks.
My first shot is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, months ahead of what I had presumed to be realistic. I don't expect to stand behind any apes as I wait my turn.

Ohio lowers its age cutoff to 50 on Thursday and just out of the blue, I figured I'd call my doctor's office and see if maybe I'd be able to get an appointment for June or something that I could use as a safety net in case constantly refreshing CVS's appointment website didn't work out.
Turns out they had an opening Friday at 11:20.

Mom got her second on Thursday and had some intense discomfort Friday but it was short lived
Neither had any side effects other than mild fatigue for about 24 hours. They were expecting worse and were pleasantly surprised.

I've been Pfizered! Vax went smoothly, lots of folks showed up, scheduled to flow evenly, have my second shot scheduled for 3/30. I had voted for September 2021 in the poll and considered that conservative. Turns out when you get a genuine leader and people who understand what they're doing and how logistics work, what would usually be just SOP becomes a miracle. So far, no side effects but it's been only a few hours.

We have a friend who's a lawyer for pharmacies. He's in touch with pharmacies who may have extra doses at the end of a day, and we have to be ready to drop everything and drive to a pharmacy somewhere in NJ on a moment's notice if they have extra vaccine after all appointments have been satisfied. It's like flying standby with your health.
Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.
And people who don't have a friend who's a lawyer for pharmacies and don't get vaccinated and die of COVID don't have any excuses - "those who don't get vaccinated will only have themselves to blame."
Just quoting LS upthread when he made his racist/classist proclamation that people don't get the vaccine deserve to die despite the fact that the distribution of the vaccine is extremely inequitable. Now he's bragging about using his privileged connections to jump the line on a vaccination that poor people of color and rural people aren't going to get a chance for months, if ever. But it's there fault for not being a white, college-educated, professional, suburban dude, right?
