After You, David (Mets 3B Count Resumed)

Post by G-Fafif » Sun Mar 31, 2019 5:57 pm

How many men on third for the Mets? With J.D. Davis's debut this weekend, 172 in all, 43 since David Wright came along in July of 2004. Davis is the first altogether post-David third baseman, as the most vestigially legendary of Met positions officially reinstalls its revolving door until another 5 in our scorecard (if not with a 5 on his back) comes along and rips it out of its hinges for another dozen or so seasons.

Here's the whole freshly updated gang...

Melvin Mora. (sigh)
I always liked Jason Hardtke because of the hardtkeness of spelling his name.
And Bill (please tell Joe Beningo that I'm NOT the guy who makes those numerical projections) Pecota.

I also still remember Jeff Torborg being very high on him. To the point of saying that fans would love watching him.

Please tell me Joe Bandabingo doesn't actually believe that former ML'er Bill Pecota spends his time making up statistical projections for current major league players!

I was listening to his show a few days ago, when they were discussing the upcoming season, and the guest mentioned the PECOTA projections. Joe said something like "That's not the old baseball player, is it?" The guest and his co-host (Evan Roberts, who knows the new stats), after recovering from the question, assured Joe it wasn't the same. But I don't recall whether or not they explained what PECOTA meant or if Joe understood them.

I feel like that's some sort of record of time passing without a third base debut.

Upthread, you’ll see three seasons contained no Mets 3B debuts: 1973, 1982 and 1990.

Yeah, this is nearly 15 months, but that's not quite Fregosi->Puig territory, to say nothing of The Gardenhire-Ashford Gap (which sounds like a chapter in Ken Burns' Civil War that featured particularly engaging essaying from Shelby Foote.

is it time for 184 yet? Brett Benny Ayala Baty is making McCann seem like a MLB hitter...and meanwhile the guy that he bypassed is the milb player of the week

I would enjoy it thoroughly if the team called him up and made a platoon squad out of the two of them.

I've watched a few Syracuse Mets games on mlb.tv this season, I really don't see what the complaint is with Vientos's defense...it's kind of like when David Wright had power, his defense was good enough for a 25+ type of guy...

I think the greater concern with Vientos right now has been his strikeout rate. But I'm a-guessing we'll see him soonly enough.
