OK! It's About Time. The Court Thread!
Re: OK! It's About Time. The Court Thread!
Whether it's 100-0 or 51-49, it's still a lifetime appointment. No part of me is rooting for Republican victories.

I think it's more likely his wife and he are in legal trouble than him being in health trouble.Lefty Specialist wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 6:31 pmNow let's see how bad Clarence Thomas' "flu-like symptoms" are.
Not that I'd hold my breath thinking something will come of it, but his wife entangling herself into cases that would be coming before him is ... something.

SCOTUS justices could be impeached. (/yeah, right!). This breaking story is outrageous, even by the sub-low standards of the Trump administration.Edgy MD wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 9:40 pmI think it's more likely his wife and he are in legal trouble than him being in health trouble.Lefty Specialist wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 6:31 pmNow let's see how bad Clarence Thomas' "flu-like symptoms" are.

But you're absolutely right. Nothing will come of this. Unless the Dems get the balls that they dont have because they're in a hermetically sealed mayonnaise jar buried 100 yards underground.
This makes so much sense in hindsight. Thomas is so extreme, he's a nutjob. It makes all the sense in the world that so is his wife.

Yeah, she's been an activist/public figure for a while. She's long struck me as far more nutty than himself.
He just hits me as an unimpressive justice.

Ginni Thomas is a full-on Trumpist nut. That being said, Thomas won't resign over this, and there's no way he gets impeached.

That's right and Thomas knows it a million times over. As hard as it is to impeach anybody, a conservative GOP appointed justice especially, will never get impeached when the opposite party has the WH and the Senate. Well, maybe impeached -- but never removed.Lefty Specialist wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 10:53 am Ginni Thomas is a full-on Trumpist nut. You know what? Tbe House should impeach Thomas anyways. Let him win his impeachment trial. At least make a record for when the Dems eventually, like a zillion years from now, expand the courts.batmagadanleadoff wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 12:36 pmThat's right and Thomas knows it a million times over. So what. When the GOP retakes the House, every Dem and their dead mothers are gonna get impeached, just the same.

Despite my worry-worting about wishy-washy Democratic Senators, Ketanji Brown Jackson is officially confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. Now on to appointing at least five more justices to an expanded court.

Do you know just how much of a hammerlock a 6-3 Supreme Court majority is? (Rhetorical: I know that you know.)

What a fiasco of a shitshow this 1/6 investigation is turning out to be. So far. Trump should've been swinging from a noose by now. Instead we have Merrick the Meek slow walking everything. Because time is definitely on his side.
All the time in the world.'
Any day now.
Let's continue to coddle the QAnon bullshit artist nutjobs and pull our punches so much when it comes to Marjorie Taylor Greene that it's like we're punching ourselves in our own faces.

This is a few days old, but hardly stale. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) unleashes a brutal and well-deserved takedown of the worst SCOTUS justice of my lifetime, Clarence Thomas, after Thomas, in the aftermath of the leaked SCOTUS opinion on Dobbs, accuses the public of bullying the high court because it doesn't like judicial rulings it should accept.

Rumors have been that this was leaked by a conservative clerk to keep everybody locked in place. Roberts apparently wanted to go a little wishy-washy and not directly overturn Roe, just keep nibbling away at it, but was overruled by Alito and the Trumpites. We may never know, but I wouldn't be surprised.

More nutjobbery from Clarence Thomas.
Thomas sez that the GOP was justified in blockading Merrick Garland because of the "rule" that a President shouldn't nominate a SCOTUS justice to fill a vacancy on the court in the fourth or last year of his presidential term. What a fucking nut liar. And how the hell does he tell that to reporters who are extremely likely to be intelligent, informed and articulate? And where then, was Thomas's outrage over Comey-Barrett's rammed through confirmation a week or two before Election Day?

As if NYC doesn't already have enough problems with the violence and maybe getting on the subway and having to worry that some deranged psycho isn't going to slice your arm off with a machete or ram a bag full of shit into your face, now NYC will soon become Dodge City. Thanks, SCOTUS.

The Supreme Court is ready to gut every blue state’s gun laws
Excerpt:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... -gun-laws/
Excerpt:
Read the rest at:Gun advocates like to say that an armed society is a polite society — in other words, if everyone is carrying guns all the time and we’re all terrified that even the slightest disagreement or misunderstanding could turn into deadly violence, we’ll be nicer to each other. This view is utterly at odds with reality and evidence of an almost psychotic morality. But on Thursday, the Supreme Court took us one giant step toward making it our future.
[***]
While not taking us quite to the unfettered firearm free-for-all some conservatives would like, the decision is extremely significant, both in its immediate effects and in what it portends. This court isn’t done expanding gun rights, not by a mile.

Re: OK! It's About Time. The Court Thread!
it only helps a little, but NY needs to fight back the way Florida did when ex-felons got the right to vote back. Make it so you have to fill out forms that don't exist and that you have to show up in person to get a gun license and basically don't have any place open that they can show up to.

Terrifying. Just terrifying.
Democracy advocates raise alarm after Supreme Court takes election case
The decision to consider “independent legislature theory” concerned voting rights advocates who say state lawmakers could twist the election laws to favor their party
Excerpt:
These are all result-oriented legal theories, invented out of thin air, and with little if any connection to the US Constitution (like the GOP hijacking of the 2nd Amendment in Heller to make lax gun control laws, for example) incubated in conservative think tanks and the Federalist Society, and then engineered to make their way through the courts. Be very afraid. (And blame libs and Dems who were too disinterested to vote for Hilary). The GOP is setting up a one-party minority rule and they've already established many of the foundational elements needed to pull this off -- like the thorough acquisition of the Supreme Court, and its destruction of the Voting Rights Act and unwillingness to involve itself in political gerrymandering. The Supreme Court isn't taking up this case to shut down the adangerous theory.
If the Supremes approve of tihis theory, any Voting Rights legislation Dems might one day pass could not only be struck down, but ruled unconstitutional. There'd be no other solution but to expand the high court, but the Dems wouldn't ever be able to get the votes to do so because GOP state legislators, and not voters, would decide elections.

The decision to consider “independent legislature theory” concerned voting rights advocates who say state lawmakers could twist the election laws to favor their party
Excerpt:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... tion-case/Voting rights advocates expressed alarm Friday, a day after the U.S. Supreme Court said it will consider a conservative legal theory giving state legislatures virtually unchecked power over federal elections, warning that it could erode basic tenets of American democracy.
The idea, known as the “independent legislature theory,” represents to some theorists a literal reading of the Constitution.
But in its most far-reaching interpretation, it could cut governors and state courts out of the decision-making process on election laws while giving state lawmakers free rein to change rules to favor their own party. The impact could extend to presidential elections in 2024 and beyond, experts say, making it easier for a legislature to disregard the will of its state’s citizens.
This immense power would go to legislative bodies that are themselves undemocratic, many advocates say, because they have been gerrymandered to create partisan districts, virtually ensuring the party-in-power’s candidates cannot be beaten. Republicans control both legislative chambers in 30 states and have been at the forefront of pushing the theory.

Re: OK! It's About Time. The Court Thread!
Not really. They have the final word on every case they rule on. There are no appeals from a Supreme Court decision. They can, literally, do whatever the hell they wanna do. If they were so determined, they could reinstate slavery.
At times, especially these times and with this court, it feels almost pointless to try and anticipate how this court will rule, trying to apply established legal precedents to how they might rule because they're literally making it up as they go along.
There's little that can be done. They're appointed for life. They can be impeached but that option is so unrealistic that it's practically a fantasy or a delusion. And no Supreme Court justice will ever be brought up on impeachment charges for the decisions they render.
This is part of a stealth 50 year campaign by some of the most powerful and influential forces in the nation to take over politics by commandeering the Supreme Court. The GOP doesn't even have to win elections anymore, which would allow them to pass legislation. Just let some backwards retard state like Mississippi pass some draconian medieval anti-abortion law and then sit back for the next three or four years as that law works its up to the highest court in the nation, where it is ultimately approved. And then New York and California have to do what the rubes in Mississippi do.

I'm very troubled by this, and don't know what I could do.
I'm sorta thinking, could we basically secede both coasts, and merge them with Canada 🇨🇦 ?

That's probably our best case scenario, oddly.
