Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Kevin Pillar

Post by Edgy MD » Thu Apr 01, 2021 11:02 pm

Don't blame me for opening day being cancelled. Yeah, not everybody got a turn at being predicted by today, but you can thank Edgy, who thought it was more important to inquire about what kind of season HVAC Guy at Citi is going to have. That's not on me.

I'm Kevin Pillar. And if there's anything the Mets like more than trying to turn guys who were regulars in their 20s in the AL East into reserves in their 30s in the NL East, it's more specifically grabbing those guys from Boston. I mostly played in Toronna, but I was a Sock for half of last season, or what qualifies as half a season, and it was about as solid a period with the bat as I've ever had.

I hope that's indicative of something, because it's not altogether clear that there is any premier centerfieldin' left in me. I mean, I'm not Gerald Williams or anything, but just because I played at Fenway doesn't make me Tris Speaker. It doesn't even make me Dom DiMaggio, but it makes me something, and I've got a highlight reel below to prove it. At least, it makes me a Met in 2021, and you get to say what kind of Met that will be.

If he embraces his role as a reserve he could be sorta useful.

I got him leading the club in triples thru May, then slumping. 250/300/375 4 triples

Comes across as intense. Intense guys coming off the bench can be useful. Sometimes all that energy looking for an outlet allows them to hit a big extra-inning walkoff homer. Sometimes it leads to them doing something stupid like hurting someone on a high five or charging the mound over a minor slight.

And with a profile like that, I might as well predict a John Cangelosi of a season for him.

.252 / .371 / .288 // .660 in 62 games. Steals five bases.

.250/ .330/ .330 in 55 games.

Makes a bunch of strong late inning defensive plays in center and does very little memorably at the plate.

I will spend up to seven weeks before I get the Pillar/Villar thing sorted out for good.
