Spencer Torkelson: Let's discuss him

Post by Johnny Lunchbucket » Sat Jan 25, 2025 3:24 pm

So some guys on the internet have discussed this guy, who's a former top draft pick but underwhelmed in Detroit so far. RH hitting 1B, 25 years old, light tower power but inconsistent.

Depends on the price, but I'd give this a shot. Almost nothing to lose

There's a reflex folks seem to have against former highly rated prospects when their names come up, but hey, the top 30 guys drafted (and/or internationally signed) each year can't all become perennial All-Stars.

Doesn't mean they can't help.

He had one decent power year, but with tons of Ks.
The second year he had a high k/AB ratio in less playing time.
That indicates to me the team played him less and less as opposing pitchers caught up with his weaknesses.
Unless he's real cheap, I'd pass.

The Tigers started him at High-A West Michigan, so I was fortunate to see his professional debut. He's been a bit of a disappointment since reaching the majors, and might have been rushed a little. He'd be a project if he came over.

Jarred Kelenic by proxy.

Trying to reclaim one former top prospect, low-average, high-power, high-strikeout dud by acquiring another former top prospect, low-average, high-power, high-strikeout dud in his place.

I'm being facetious, to some extent, as Torkelson is still just 25 and yet to hit his prime.

But on this one I'm not bullish.

They don't have any Spencer's on the team so there's that

Tiger fans have been waiting for Torky to breakout kinda like Mets fans have been waiting for Baty to do the same

I could picture a Baty for Torkelson swap, although the Tigers already have a lefty third baseman. The Tigers also have a very deep pen I wouldn't mind picking from, but I'm really not sure what they want in return.

Torkelson can hit lefthanded pitching well enough. The question is how much more than the going rate for a short-side platoon 1B/DH would you offer for his perceived upside.
