IGT 5/5/2024: NYM@TBR — Severino de Mayo
Re: IGT 5/5/2024: NYM@TBR — Severino de Mayo
On the bright side, the last time the Mets started a season 16-18, they ended up having a winning season (2019).
So all hope is not lost.

Ms. Edgy: "Did the Mets beat the Onesies?"
Edgy: "No, they didn't."
Ms. Edgy: "They got swept by THE ONESIES?!"

If Diaz isn't the 2022 Diaz, this team is in for a rough ride. And so far he isn't.
Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.

Maybe $1/foot between the plate and first?

This game was only the fourth time in Mets history that a game ended with a walkoff triple. Three of the four games that ended with a three-base hit were losses for the Mets:
June 24, 1968: Lee May of the Reds at Crosley Field. (Reds 6, Mets 5, 11 innings)
June 19, 1980: Jack Clark of the Giants at Candlestick. (Giants 4, Mets 3, 10 innings)
May 5, 2024: Jonny DeLuca of the Rays at Tropicana Field. (Rays 7, Mets 6, 10 innings.)
And the one win:
September 10, 1970. Cleon Jones of the Mets at Shea. (Mets 3, Phillies 2, 14 innings)

It kind of strains credulity to give a guy credit for a walkoff triple. What is happening on the basepaths to credit the batter with reaching third before the runner from first scores and ends the game?
I'm not saying it didn't happen. Maybe the baserunner fell over or went into early celebration before touching to plate, but it was fine because the outfielder had already given up on the play. But the batter-runner kept hammering his way around the bases. But that's a lot of maybes to happen on one play.
How slow does the runner on first have to be (or, possibly, how many things have to happen to him) for Jack Clark to reach third before he scores?

I share your skepticism.
My guess is that if the winning run scores from first, and the batter/runner touches third base, he gets credited (incorrectly) with a triple, whether or not he got there before the run scored.
