Move-In Day

Post by Edgy MD » Wed Aug 14, 2024 5:06 pm

So, where are your kids heading to school this fall? Or are they perhaps reporting for military duty? Gap year? Peace Corps? Internships? Police academy? Trade school?

Share that I might live vicariously.

One grandson is heading back to his sophomore year at Rochester Institute of Technology and the other grandson is heading for Middle School in Connecticut.

My granddaughter is also moving on into middle school. She’s a bit nervous.

Grandson will be in fourth grade.

Our daughter has taught fifth grade for several years now…let’s see…about 19 I think.

Fboy leaves Sunday, August 25 for his sophomore year at SUNY Oneonta. He's majoring in elementary education there. He had a great freshman year, made some friends and made the Dean's List in the spring.

Fgirl will start her senior year of high school after Labor Day. She's narrowed down her preferred SUNY destinations to Geneseo (my alma mater) or Oswego. We took the Geneseo tour this past Tuesday and she really liked the campus. She has to decide if she likes it enough to be an hour further from home than she'd be if she went to Oswego instead.

Lunchpail will be a freshman at the University of Toronto. They ran out of campus housing so he will be condemned to a luxury high rise near campus (own bathroom, kitchen, rooftop swimming pool, gym etc). Lots of other students too so hopefully not too isolating. Orientation starts 8/25 and classes 9/2

The youngest took off for Auburn AL to start her sophomore year in their Nursing program.
The eldest returns to her second (and final) year of Grad School at Tufts after completing her summer internship in Hawaii.

Oh to be young again

What made Lunchpail choose Toronto as opposed to a school here in the States? Not that it's a bad thing. Great city, and the school has a stellar reputation. If I remember correctly, neighborhood was great, too.

I know that McGill makes it fairly easy for US citizens to stay after graduation, and I'm guessing Toronto does, too.

It's a beautiful city. LittlestDGW spent a semester at York University on a study abroad program, and loved her time up there. She came back loving hockey, Tim Hortons, and dropped the occasional "eh" ;-)

To judge by the recruitment materials sent to my house, McGill wanted me bad, but I was too much of a numbnuts to even consider it.

Congratulations to Lunchy and may the maple leaf ever fly. Congrats to all.

He wanted an urban school. Most of the SUNY's were campuses disconnected from cities like Albany and Buffalo, the two that had the best programs of study for him (he wants to study human geography)

Toronto has a good rep for his study area--also a big international student body

The campus is nice and right in the city--it's the NYU of Canada. Toronto is a pretty safe and clean big city

Just in case in November

Mostly he wanted something different than a USA party school. Gen Z kids rejecting all the conventions of their elders

And yeah if the worst happens in November he’ll be away for the four years

I wasn't aware of the term "human geography" until just now. I looked it up; it sounds pretty interesting.

Right now, I am in SE Ohio in the process of dropping off my daughter, who is a senior, at Ohio University. Next week I go to Delaware to drop off my younger daughter, a freshman, at University of Delaware.

Two daughters in college at the same time.
Been there.
Done that.
Got both t-shirts.
Congrats. You deserve it.

Yup. I lived in Dickinson (fall) and Russell (spring) as a freshman. I'm pretty sure they demolished Dickinson a few years ago.

Lefty Jr coming up on his first anniversary working as a contractor on-site at CISA, the Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency. Yes they have 'Security ' in their name twice. We're old-hand empty-nesters at this point.
