Assassination today in Manhattan
I don't think there's a long history of CEOs being assassinated, but it happened today at a Hilton Hotel in Manhattan. Brian Thompson, 50, of UnitedHealthcare was killed by a masked gunman who then fled on a bicycle.

Curious to see how this plays out, likely denied coverage on something

Re: Assassination today in Manhattan
My immediate thought this morning when I saw this on AP
was geez was he a Biden/Harris supporter. They're gonna just
start picking off high-end guys like this who may stand their
way?
I was probably nuts and half awake. The guy could have been
boinking someone's wife and paid dearly for it...

I work a (long) block away from there and was close to there this morning. Might've walked by the shooter.

I hope you kept your face away from the cameras or you'll be interviewed all afternoon.cal sharpie wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 2:21 pm I work a (long) block away from there and was close to there this morning. Might've walked by the shooter.
I've stayed in that hotel and the room was tinier than your average walk-in closet.
My first thought when I saw that was a memory of a Law and Order episode at least 20 years ago. It was about a husband whose wife had been denied coverage for a new cancer treatment and he shot the insurance company exec.
This seems targeted, not random. So it might be a similar motive.

They seem pretty convinced that it was targeted, which is why I'm referring to it as an assassination. The killer apparently knew when his victim would arrive at the hotel and was there waiting for him.
Apparently UnitedHealthcare had a pretty significant security breach earlier this year. Maybe there's a connection somehow.

And patients will wake up screaming half way through a heart transplant because the Anesthesiologist says, "That's it. I'm punching out and going golfing".

Re: Assassination today in Manhattan
turns out we didn't have to wait too long for the stupidest thing in the history of stupidest things to surpass the golden at bat.
Re: Assassination today in Manhattan
No, it's more likely that they'll get all the anesthesia they need, and get sent home from the hospital prematurely, only to find a bill they can never pay waiting for them, and their recovery will be a race to see if they can get on their feet before their home is seized.
The main problem with changing our health care system is that the current system is working for most of us, at a given point in time, and while it will fail us all, eventually — catastrophically and unjustly for many — it's always a minority who are vulnerable at that singular point, though we will all be vulnerable eventually.
And somehow we've been conditioned into the belief that, when we're not the vulnerable ones, it's because we're somehow better and deserve it — not that we're just lucky as Hell.
Whatever you think of them, it's the anesthesiologists who are the whistleblowers here, not the golfers.

Re: Assassination today in Manhattan
From the way this reads, it sounds like anesthesiologists are paid by the hour and each procedure will have a specific number of billable hours allowed.
Why else would the insurance companies care if a procedure "takes too long"?
I has a friend who was an anesthesiologist. He passed away several years ago. We never discussed how he got paid.
Can any of the CPF-ers who work in the medical field shed some light on that?

Re: Assassination today in Manhattan
While anesthesiologists probably aren't paid by the hour, patients are billed by the hour. My don had surgery earlier this year and the EOB document listed the anesthesia as a series of 15-minute procedures.
There are some charges that the insurance companies force the providers to eat. I don't know how that works, but it's classified as not billable to the patient and the insurance company doesn't pay it either. Maybe this overtime anesthesia falls into that category.

Re: Assassination today in Manhattan
However it reads, it does not suggest that anesthesiologists are going to abandon their patients. It is explicitly the anesthesiologists themselves warning that a health insurer is abandoning its members.

Surveillance has unearthed a decent photograph of the suspect so I suppose it's just a matter of time now, before he's identified --- and then caught, unless he decides to kill himself before he's captured.
