Memories of Jake Diekman

Post by Edgy MD » Wed Feb 19, 2025 2:02 pm

Never officially announced on MLB wires, but reported about eight days ago as having signed minor-league style with the Braves.

With the signing, Atlanta has additionally invited Diekman's beard to report to major-league camp.

The first stop heading south on the A train was Dyckman Street.
That's all I got.

Danny Young, I believe.

Struck out Aaron Judge on a Franco-to-Bonds style pitch to close out a win against the other NY team last year.

May 16 - Philadelphia
- Diaz can't protect a one run lead in bottom 9th and sends it to extras
- Mets score twice in Top 11 and turn the bottom half over to Diekman as Quintana, Garrett, Ottavino, Diaz, and Jorge Lopez have already been used
- after getting the first out, the Ghost runner scores on an infield single/walk/RBI-GO
- a SB puts the tying run on 3rd and the winner on 2nd ... but Diekman sacks up and Ks Schwarber for the win

Mets were 4-9 in May prior to that game and would go on to lose 10 of the next 14 after it.
A lone bright spot in that month and probably Diekman's best moment* as a Met

*unless it was the K of Judge. For whatever reason, I remember the Schwarber one more

This is the sort of explicit memories these threads are made for.

Anything he did poorly last year was outweighed by that single moment.

He may have left it all on the field there, too, as he only appeared in two games after that, pitching poorly against the Braves, allowing homers both times out, and then shutting down for the rest of the season.

In addition to the Judge strikeout, I remember the hope I had for Diekman when he was signed. Shintaro Fujinami too. I had visions of those two fireballers getting fixed at the pitching lab and bringing heat at the end of games.

Oh well. The lab doesn't always work.

I rooted for him to pull an Jorge Lopez and get his ass canned. Felt like a real throwback to really wanting a guy off the team most of the time he was here, ’cause I’m a lot mellower about those things than I used to be. But thanks for getting Judge out.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

Zero positive memories. The worse half of the weird facial hair-having duo of Diekman/Garrett, and that's saying something. My favorite memory of him is when they got rid of him.
