Working.
Chad's list seems like ours.
I'd copy it, but it was sent as a fucking pdf.
You get a feel that the holiday is declining in importance when your sanitation company is working.

Working. I think it's been more than thirty years since I worked for a company that closed on Columbus Day.

Working. I was part of a merger in 2013 and that year the company we merged with had Columbus Day off so we did too. It was a beautiful fall day that year and it was pretty great having that day off.
We do close the week between Christmas and New Years but otherwise have the same list as everyone else.

Off. But I think a lot of places sacrificed Columbus Day in favor of Juneteenth.
Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.

Wife and kids all had the day off so I took it and we drove down yesterday to Goshen to hit Legoland with my brother and his family. Drove home today
Re: Work Check: Indigenous Peoples' Day
Was off. And the postal service was too, so there's that.

It was more fun for my nephews (age 8 & 5) than my own kids. They kind of cater to the littler kid crowd. We had a fun time though. Good to spend time with familywhippoorwill wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2023 4:40 pm I would have worked but I was off sick

So would my son :)

Re: Work Check: Indigenous Peoples' Day
I think Columbus Day was pretty much cancel cultured, though it was really only a holiday in the northeast to begin with. School was closed when I was growing up in NY. it's been 'replaced' in a sense on the calendar of company holidays by various things in different places.

Re: Work Check: Indigenous Peoples' Day
The holiday was created by FDR so as to curry favor with the first generation of recent immigrant Italians and their native born offspring.
There was no nation of Italy in C.C.'s time (he would have identified as Genovese) and, of course, he sailed under a Spanish flag. Nor did he ever set foot on present day U.S. soil.
But his voyage(s) was a major force ushering in the age of exploration which led to the creation of this country and to hang many of the future sins against the indigenous populations on a ship captain is beyond ridiculous.

Well, he was more than a ship captain.
And as you note, something less than an Italian.

In 1492 'Columbus sailed the ocean blue' would make a great
opening line to a punk rock song.

Why future sins? So many of the people who were there when Columbus showed up were murdered, raped, tortured and enslaved under his direction.Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 8:43 pm The holiday was created by FDR so as to curry favor with the first generation of recent immigrant Italians and their native born offspring.

'Future sins' meaning the ones committed by this country's government against Indian populations in the form of broken treaties and false promises
of of taking care of them under the reservation system that was set up by the federal government. None of those were the fault of an Admiral for
Spain who died nearly 300 years before this country was even this country.

'Governors' appointed to run things while he was off exploring elsewhere. Some of those Governors were appointed by him but others were assigned

to the throne who objected to this foreign hired hand).

Some of it and a lot of it. I guess he’s clean then. How bout some statues and a bank holiday?Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Sat Oct 14, 2023 9:22 pm'Future sins' meaning the ones committed by this country's government against Indian populations in the form of broken treaties and false promises

Edit: I clearly disagree with you on this stuff, but sorry for gettin a little spicy, FK. Being from NM, I have a lifetime of Conquistador fatigue in me.

Re: Work Check: Indigenous Peoples' Day
I've always been quite indifferent to a holiday in his honor and mainly was a bit perplexed growing up by his status as an American hero.A Boy Named Seo wrote: ↑Sun Oct 15, 2023 11:28 pm Some of it and a lot of it. I guess he’s clean then. How bout some statues and a bank holiday?
Much of that was apparently an early 20th century thing as it seems that a certain pct of 'Native' Americans -- meaning the WASP-ish
clans who were the dominant force in this country at that time -- seemed to have hit upon the idea of holding him up as a kind of
pre-founding father even though, as talked about, he never set foot on future U.S.A. soil and the only non-island he lit upon was present
day Venezuela and even then just briefly during his fourth and final voyage. Then, on top of that, some of the late-19th/early-20th
century immigrants, even non-Italian ones such as eastern European Jews (there's a school of thought that his mother was a converted
Jew which in Spain at the time of course meant forced conversion) approved of him specifically because he was, like them, distinctly
NOT Anglo-Saxon, so he was getting praise from all sides. Then came the FDR-approved holiday to satisfy newly arrived Italian-
Americans (because he recognized a growing voting bloc when he saw one) and it was off to the races particularly in heavily ethnic
New York and the surrounding northeast section of the country.
As far as statues, I think localities should decide what they want to do about whatever they've got laying around. And if Columbus,
Ohio, the largest city in the country named for him, wants to turn their back on the holiday itself (as they have) it seems to me that
they ought to go whole hog and change the name of their town.
I'm not even sure we're disagreeing on very much. Some of the actions were clearly under his watch, others were clearly not, othersEdit: I clearly disagree with you on this stuff, but sorry for gettin a little spicy, FK. Being from NM, I have a lifetime of Conquistador fatigue in me.
still are unknown and probably unknowable. I don't defend him to any degree other than to say that I'm much more concerned with
what this country, as a country claiming to be much better, did to native populations above what occurred as the result of clashes
of cultures between small groups 300+ years before the country even existed. Then there's the newer view of him which, because
he was first, turns him into a kind of alpha-evil figure laying all of what happened afterward squarely on him, as if none of this
would have happened if not for THAT guy. That, I think, can get as over the top as was the earlier view where he was seen as the
reason this wonderful country got started in the first place.

Re: Work Check: Indigenous Peoples' Day
In a real shocker, it was just revealed that Buffy Sainte-Marie was NOT indigenous.
Gasp!
Later
https://www.cbc.ca/newsinteractives/fea ... inte-marieLate last year, CBC received a tip that Sainte-Marie is not of Cree ancestry but, in fact, has European roots. She is the latest high-profile public figure whose ancestry story has been contradicted by genealogical documentation, including her own birth certificate, historical research and personal accounts — the latest chapter in the complex and growing debate around Indigenous identity in Canada.
